possible to clean a mechanical fuel pump?
 

I have an edelbrock RPM fuel pump feeding a RobbMC Powersurge fuel cell. About a year ago my Earl's rubber fuel inlet hose along the chassis basically dissolved and cracked so I replaced with stainless straight line and PTFE braided line. The engine didnt start and i noticed the fuel pressure was down to 2 psi. I initially thought it was the electrical pump or the circuit. All has checked out ok but as i replaced the electric pump i noticed a large amount of black goo on the pump sock and on the bottom of the surge tank, also there was no fuel from the mechanical pump.

Can the pump be serviced or flushed put or do i need to just get a new one?

You could learn about mechanical fuel pumps by taking it apart.
The web pictures say that is possible. The things to look at would be:
The pump diaphragm and the check valves. If they look good then try
it on the engine. Not sure if they offer a rebuild kit but if the parts
visually look good it is worth a cleaning and a test on the engine.

Well took it apart and sure enough black tar in fuel pump valves and cavities. Cleaned alot out but will at the least need a diagram rebuild it is worse for wear for sure

I would be interested in where you procure parts for a fuel pump rebuild. How our old ones will survive with ethanol is an unknown. Rebuilding our spares with ethanol-compatible parts would be wise, I think.

Interesting that this is a newer edelbrock pump but the valve seals itself are what dissolved. Even more reason to leave california! I ordered a new pump since i am not sure what Carter parts would fit BUT i found 2 places that might be able to help then-now-auto.com and Mancini racing both seem to have Carter fuel pump parts. then-now-auto even have some youtube vieos, they seem to know what they are talking about.

You already have the RobbMC power surge tank. Any reason you didn't go with one of his pumps? They are also rebuildable and says they are safe with ethanol blended fuels. His rebuild kits are only about $20 too so carrying a spare is cheap insurance.

I was tempted to go with Robbmc since I have so many of his items anyway. Probably should have. I plan to figure which carter parts will work and then to rebuild my old one to have a spare

Yes, Those kits on the Edelbrock site are for electric pumps.
I rebuild our CV billet pumps annually...kits are ~$150..ea!
There is a black foam cube in the base that must be there and in the correct well.
The O rings on the valves deteriorate with some of the oxygenated fuels we use.
And the main diaphragm is laminated where it meets fuel, but the atmosphere side looks 30 years old in a year of service.

Take the heart apart. Assess.

I don't like NPT fittings in a HP fuel system... if I can avoid them.

I believe carbking recommended them in a previous thread.
No issues so far. Fuel pressure is about 5 psi.
