1969 Judge

Hi all,

A friend just bought a beautiful 1969 Judge. Simple question, was the std automatic 400 a YS or were all Judges RA lll or better?

Thanks,

Mark

All 69 Judges were RA cars.Tom

Thanks Tom. I'm concerned then about this being the real deal. It is a YS and no RA exhaust manifolds, just the std logs.

Probably the best is to get the PHS for it.

Does the car have the Ram Air pull knob to the side of the steering column?

He has a lot of documents that we're going to go through, if there isn't a PHS we'll get one. Yes, it has the RA pull knob. Everything seems to fit exc the YS engine. I'll update once we go through all the docs.

May be a real Judge with an engine transplant. 50+ years on, most GTOs no longer retain their original engines.

That's true but the swap to log manifolds would require head pipe changes also. Battery cable routing might also need to be changed, which has harness implications. If it has a non-ram air engine harness, that wouldn't be a good sign.

He could be right my buddy got a ram air II GTO with a complete 68 WT 400 in it manifolds and all. It even had the correct stamped rear for the 4.33 but had 3.31 in it. We assumed it was probably done when the car was not that old.

No doubt it's been through a restoration, they went as far as putting the YS sticker on the front of the engine. Car is orange with a white convertible top and parchment interior, drop dead gorgeous.

A 69 Judge automatic should have a YZ 400 block. Better get that phs on the car. Also post some pictures since everyone likes pictures of Pontiacs.

Only 108 Judge convertibles were made so that would be one rare Judge if it's legit.

Only 108. They are all rare.

I have owned 2. I hear that there only thirty something left

I've been on a much-needed vacation; I should have more info next week. I can say he bought the car somewhere in Connecticut.

Hoping the car was represented accurately when purchased.

Many fakes running around today. Seems there are more Judges today than ever produced. People are finding these cars in salvage yards and removing the data plates then placing them on a GTO, Lemans, etc. to create another car. The PHS tells what the car came with so people can recreate a car. Jim Mattison of PHS recently commented in The Legend, that fraud is everywhere. Research the car you are looking at well otherwise you take a chance of getting burned. Excellent advice!!! Most of these cars lost their original engines decades ago. But with modern techniques, people are restamping engine blocks and other accessories to make them look like the genuine article. As Mattison said, beware!!

I think this might be the case. He hasn't brought in any documents for me to look at and I don't think I'll push him. I already told him it doesn't have the RA exhaust manifolds like it should and as it turns out the wrong engine code. He was going to take it to a knowledgeable restoration shop for them to look over. He may know now but is not saying. :-ohwell:
