what type of wire wrap tape is this?

Looking for some wire loom tape like this in the picture & not having much luck. This is on a 2020 chevrolet, frame mounted wiring harness. Tape is a very tough cloth, 1-1/4" wide tape, & interestingly only has adhesive on 1/4" of one edge. I suppose that's all thats needed to make it work & maybe makes the harness more flexible because its not sticking to the wires themselves. I don't care so much about the adhesive part of it, but would like to find something similar. I did order of few rolls of cloth wire loom tape & its not the same at all. its more of an interior type soft tape, where this is more like hockey stick tape. Seems like its somewhat water resistant as well.

Its pretty tough stuff & difficult to tear as well.

Anything you use look like this stuff?

Is it hook & loop or adhesive?
Here’s something kind of similar. GM pn 84820678.
Kevlar.
Try your Chevy dealer for what you have there since it’s a 2020.

I work for one of the other automotive manufacturers and do electrical repair. We use a similar product in areas where abrasion is a concern. I believe this is the same or very similar, and i noticed it comes in 2 different widths. https://www.amazon.com/Tesas-Advance...90500764&psc=1

Thanks!

actually, looking closer edge of the factory tape has adhesive on both edges, but opposite sides sides. Looks to be designed so that the two sticky edges bond together & the rest of it remains glue free. 1/4" overlap glue on glue. pretty cool design actually & no wonder its hard to unravel. I have never seen tape like this before.

sticky part aside, I only have to wrap about 24" of it so full adhesive will be just fine & I probably didn't need to mention that part of it, but I find it interesting.

I put a bright LED light behind it & light only passes through the 1/4" adhesive edges. Looked a little closer & the center 3/4" of the factory tape is actually thicker.

The Tesa tape does look like something thats more durable than what I bought already. what I bought is for sure more of a soft cloth. Probably designed more for interior use to keep wire rattle noise to a minimum even though in the description it says engine compartment tape.

I'll look into Tesa & I'll contact the dealer as well. Great ideas!

This picture below is the tape I bought that I thought might work. Its cloth, but very thin & flexible. Very different

I can confirm that it is Tesa tape.

I was an engineer for GM truck for 40 years; we used it (use it) all the time.

Keith, do you think there is something available on the consumer market that is similar?
Maybe not the way it attaches with he adhesive edges, but from a strength & material type perspective?
Do any of these Tesa tapes on amazon have similar properties?

Thanks!

I think I am getting close!

I am thinking its either this one: 51036-PV6
https://www.tesa.com/en-us/industry/...51036-pv6.html

Or this one: 51026-PV6
https://www.tesa.com/en-us/industry/...51026-pv6.html

Looks like it must be 29-31mm tape, but I am not finding it for sale anywhere. Or I am just bad at online shopping.:p Maybe a combination of both.

I am finding the 51036 without the PV6 designation & no "adhesive on adhesive" bonding. Maybe I have to settle with 3/4" tape & just be happy its the correct material?

Cool stuff. I couldn't find it retail either ... dealership parts counter might be a good source. GM probably has a part number for it.

68ragtop 11-22-2022 07:30 AM

Morning Data! I did call my local chevrolet dealer. They don't see a part number for the tape, but said their service guys use a tape from lawson. I think its one of those things were the majority of people are just going to use what ever black tape they have on the shelf & call it good. As so much of this kind of work is a hobby of mine, I enjoy trying to make things the way they were from the factory, unless its something that needs to be improved.

When my GTO was finished one of the things I never realized is how much I would miss is all the years of research. Which of course included contributions from all you guys in figuring out correct wire routing, nuts, bolts & endless details in that car. I'll bet you'll feel the same way soon as your car is so close to done. :) Its so cool to encapsulate it into a finished product, but you end up with an weird emptiness about it about a year later.

I'm the same way with my 2011 GM truck ... after all the work to get original stuff for the GTO I try real hard to keep the late model vehicles all original. I get a kick out of being able to order real OEM parts from a dealer.

I remember when I could walk into a dealership and buy parts for my GTO .. but I didn't, being young and broke :)

68ragtop 11-22-2022 01:08 PM

Like you, I had been working on my GTO for so many years, I had a bunch of parts I actually bought at the dealer. door handles, emblems, etc. By the time I installed those parts they were NOS & long unavailable from GM

So back to the tape thread......

It does indeed appear I need either the Tesa 51036-PV6, or 51026-PV6
I have searched everywhere I know of & to my surprise it doesn't appear that I can order it anywhere.
I can buy the 3/4 51036 (without the PV6 designation) but its the PV6 that makes this tape so unique.

Thought I would share an update. I ordered the only variation of this tape I could find which was the 51036.
Its the 3/4" version with the entire back having adhesive like most tapes do. I can say that Keith is correct (not that I doubted him)
that it is the exact same material. I wrapped the section of harness making 50% overlaps.
It for sure made the harness way less flexible than the original sleeve style tape but its visually undetectable unless you look close at the overlaps.

Thanks for everyones help on this. I did find it strange that I could not find the IP6 version, but otherwise all is good.
Nice tape. I will be adding a few more rolls to the tool box. :)

Looks just like factory.... I always say my repairs need to make it to the junkyard!:D
