Valve covers

Ok restoring my car tech. Question. On a stock 1970 formula 400 ram air 3 did the value covers have drippers and the rocket plate covering rocket or rocket guild plate no drippers. My peeling value covers have drippers not sure if they got swapted out long ago or at stupid machine shop.

Drippers it Did have . I had a RAIII apart for the first time years back and a 1970 HO 455, and only the #64 heads had the big Rocker guide assembly bolted to the head.
I may still have a set. Will look at a set of 12 heads later .

Thanks now I'm wondering how I got the rocker guild plates. I think I was told I had rocker guide plates and no drivers but covers have droppers. Tgis is confusing.

All 1970-72 'performance' engines had pushrod guide plates and the bolt-on drippers.

2 Attachment(s)
Guideplates bolted on either under the screw-in studs on 'performance' (GTO/FB/GP) engines or with two separate bolts on each one for 'low performance engines with pressed studs.

Drippers were the stamped sheet metal style with the three mounting towers and attached via the (3) studded head bolts.

Ram Air III used standard-style 5/16" pushrods and standard guideplates.

Ram Air IV had the 11/32" guideplates along with the more elaborate adjuster/dripper/stabilizer assemblies that attached directly to the top of the rocker studs and was used to adjust the valves. Kind of a miniature stud girdle.

Pretty sure that the drippers that were welded to the valve covers started in 1973.

Since very few of us bought our Pontiacs brand new, it's fairly normal to find that that things have been swapped around in the past fifty-plus years.

If I need these guidelines plates and rocker dripoer plates are they easy to find?

johnta1 05-13-2022 03:10 PM

The drippers were probably yanked and put who knows where if any work was done to the engine/heads.
(or aftermarket valve covers put on)

I probably had hundreds of them, not sure if I have any left after moving.

:(

I probably have the elevated RA4 set up.

Ramairnacho 05-13-2022 10:31 PM

I need ra3 guild plate set up but thanks

RA IV are the only one to be different. The RA III is the same as the 350,400, 455 engines.
