69 Firebird makeover
1 Attachment(s)
I decided to give the bird a makeover to freshen it up a bit, lots of surprises after stripping it. Both quarters were replaced with skins. I'm replacing door skins and replacing the hood. The rear body panel is a bit of a mess.

Welds look like they puckered the panels a little but not horrible. That could be worked some so you can use much less filler.
|
I know that I would be pretty happy with that weld seam. Just needs a skim coat...

I have the old door skin off, have to do a little bit of welding to the edges but its not bad, the new skin fit good from what I could see.

New door skin fits pretty good to the rear quarter but not so good to the fender. The fender was patched up so I'll have to give that some attention.

fender gaps

I have the left door skin on and mounted the door to see how it fit, it need some help. The gap to the quarter is tight on top and wide on the bottom. Would you add to the door skin edge or slit the quarter?
|
I'm not anywhere near an expert but I would rather work the door edge than the quarter myself.

I decided to do the quarter, the door skin came out to nice to mess with it. I ended up cutting the quarter along the edge and rewarding it. I'm happy withe results.

I have a question for the auto body guys here. Do you guys wash your body filler with final wash before priming? I don't but wanted to hear what you guys think. I've been doing this for a long time but thought I would ask.
|
I do, I try not to touch anything with bare hands bit I still do it just to be safe.
|
how long do you let it dry, seams like it would soak up like a sponge.
|
I 'wash' with degreaser I get from the autobody supply store. Can't remember the name of it. I would think that soap and water would be ok though as long as you let it dry really well. Maybe under a heat lamp?
|
It dries fairly quickly, you can see it change color then it slowly changes back. I think if you waiting 30 min then tack cloth it you would be good. It takes me that long to prep paint anyway lol
