540 w 87cc eheads, about 11.3:1 cam

contemplating this conglomeration of parts, i have short block, heads, rpm or torker 2 intake,or warrior, and a 750 dominator/850 4150 depending. with a gd cam choice, will it run on 93? old chambered eheads
block is zero decked, pistons have good size notches maybe 8cc,heads should be 87 but will verify

Based on the info I have garnered here while lurking those cams are way, way too small for a 540 at 11:1.

quick67bird 08-11-2022 09:34 AM

My KRE Dport 455 engine runs fine at 11.56-1. I know these heads have the modern chamber so not quite apples to apples comparison. The engine also has a huge solid flat tappet cam shaft. If I finally get to run the car at the track I will add some 110 just to be safe. I do some spirited street driving and haven’t had an issue now that I have seen on my plugs.

Maybe this helps.....

My fathers 571ci runs a set of the old Edelbrock round ports with the bathtub chambers that he bought in the 90's long before the heart shape chambers came along.

The compression is 10.84:1. He currently runs a 261/265 @ .050 hydraulic roller on a 112 LSA and I installed it at 106 ICL.
Keep in mind as you may know, if you go solid roller the cam would have to be several degrees bigger (on paper) to act similar.

It runs perfectly on the 91 pump gas we have here in Arizona and has been for several years now with tons of street miles and quite a few drag passes mixed in.

This engine also liked 34 degrees on the dyno where it made best HP and TQ. Not the super high timing that most report with those bathtub chamber heads.

For what it's worth, the cam is a custom grind that Paul C. did for me that uses Harold Brookshire designed lobes. With a Voodoo lobe on the intake and an older Ultradyne style lobe on the exhaust. It's also a 4-7 swap. Not that it matters.

Are you looking for this to be pump gas friendly? If so what octane is Hi-Test in your area?

Stan

quick67bird 08-11-2022 12:43 PM

He did mention pump gas on 93 octane Stan. I forgot to mention our high octane gas here in WA state is 91 with up to 10% ethanol.

93 octane is available yes, i have not tested it as i have no way to test it, like i do e85. i have a 1250 e85 dominator, but im trying to make it as tame and as driveable as i can. I can get e85 at two places within 60 miles of me. i usually fill a barrel. If i do this, i want to be able to drive this wo bringing a barrel/jug

With the right cam, sure. No reason it could not work. My 540 was originally planed with old school E heads and Scott Brown knew exactly what I was doing and set me up for 11.5 CR on 91 pump gas.
Might want to E mail him about a cam.

Gotta have a big "non dynamic" cam in that thing to run at those cubes with that compress with pump piss.

can't be too careful!

I would run something with a similar duration as the RP HR (245/255@0.050" duration) which will make over 600 Hp and be very streetable.

Thanks I missed that.

While 0.050" duration might be what people want to look at. You really also need to know the seat-to seat duration is to get an idea about what cylinder pressure will be. The RP which someone said has 306 / 307 degrees seat-to-seat from what I can see. I believe this is about the min.seat-to seat duration you want to be looking at. Where you place the ICL also will factor in.

I’m at 1/2 point less with bathtub chamber E heads on a 517 with the RP cam Stan mentions above and haven’t had a hint of detonation on 93 @ 37 degrees total. I degrees it to the card which I think was 108 on a 112 LSA. Very tame street drive ability.
With 23 more inches a 250’s/260’s @.050 cam with similar lobes would be just as drivable and may be ok on 93, especially if you put the LSA on a 114 and put the intake around 110.

The cam I mentioned above in the 571 that Paul spec'd is advertised at 318/326
