Is it difficult to spray ? Read a few bad stories about with long drying process ..shrinkel paint ..
I bought a quart for spraying with a HVLP spray gun |
I think you'll have to reduce it with something, pretty thick stuff. And if you are using something like a PPS system check to make sure the metallic will pass through the lid screen. (if you are using one of the metallic pontiac engine colors).

No, it sprays pretty easy. You definitely want to thin it though. Don't put it on too thick when spraying. Several light coats will cover well and it will dry quicker. I only use a thin coat on the exhaust ports and use VHT header paint in a cast finish underneath first. I also put a light coat of Duplicolor engine paint primer on the rest of the engine first before spaying the Bill Hirsch color. |
I called them on the Rattle can stuff. Told me to use primer first on the steel parts and spray direct on the cast parts.

I can’t say enough good things about the Hirsch engine enamels. I would definitely say spray over brush, no primer, no reducer if possible. Spray vs. brush looked night/day to me. A 1.4 HVLP should be fine, I made a 1.3 RP work (un-reduced).
No primer on cast (iron or aluminum). They say you can reduce with Xylene (small amounts), but you probably won’t have to. Flake size is impressive, definitely looks like a quality micro flake. I mixed acetone in some leftover paint and was surprised as it reacted and swirled around. Uniform micro flake. Color looks great in person. I wasn’t fond of the real silvery looking light blue from some of the go-to rattle cans (‘68 in pic). |
