Well time has come for paint finally for my car...
I’ve started stripping and gutting the shell to basically nothing.Engine , trans, dash ,heaterbox, complete interior etc....
In the process now of taking the paint off
I’m also going to rescure the under hood bracing to the skin with the 3M NVH product recommend here from mrennie as well as others
Stripping the paint is tough not sure if it’s had hi build primer under it but it seems thick too.....I’ll post some pics if when I remember kinda get caught up in the process....
No filler to be found and still has the lead on the quarters It looks like

Those quarter panels without any damage or body filler are a beautiful sight! Congrats.

curious to see how the nvh foam works out. hadn't heard of it. I see it has a 60 min work time so it must be pretty thin. read that its used between panels prior to installing a panel so sounds thin? I would like to put extra support "blobs" between the hood skin bracing as well.

I'm thinking the flexible 3m seam sealer in black will work. I used it quite a bit. expensive but really hardens yet flexible. not runny either.

I shouldn't admit this but did something very silly. on my 69 Gto hood I had this idea that black roofing caulk would simulate the blobs and be flexible and work great. I squeezed some out and it seemed perfect and i figured being for roofs would be heat tolerant.

after driving it the next day, luckily by chance I popped the hood for a maintenance check, well the roof caulking was dripping down all over the place! boy that was a bummer cleaning all that. I was cheeping out thinking I outsmarted things. :o

When I used that product, by the time it came out of the zig-zag mixing tip is was black but had a rough looking texture, if that makes any sense. If it had not mixed with the activator it would probably look smooth.

I think if the 2 parts mixed enough it should still set up, eventually...

Let us hope for the best, but based on the photo posted above, it looks like only one part of the 2-part mix came through the gun. Eeeps!

cnc 10-11-2020 06:23 PM

Well loooked at the hood this morning and yes some of the stuff mixed and has the rough looking texture kinda reminds me of Eatmore Chocolate bar with out the peanuts...lol
Other is smooth but looks like it might have held....I'll check again tomorrow
I bought it from amazon and emailed the company I got it from told them what Happend ...see if anything happens don't expect anything
So either I leave it or look for it locally and redo it all...

mrennie 10-11-2020 09:21 PM

:)Today I stripped out the trunk lid top and bottom the trunk channel and surround
Also stripped the tail panel ....all with no suprises...
Tomorrow I'll do the pass side door hinges ...ordered a kit online from a place in Sarnia short shipped two bushings sent them an email got a Call from them that nite ....they send me to there returns line leave a message ....that was a week ago ....crickets .....went out and bought bushing kit...last one from part source....counter guy was shocked he had it....
Once the bushings are in I'll strip the doors and the jambs..not gonna worry about the roof area to strip where the rubber seals fit and the chrome decor moldings attach to...I don't think...I'll look at it all tomorrow again...
Another note .....Krylon Semi flat black paint in an aerosol ...non to be had around here...
Home Depot,Rona , TSC,Homehardware,Canadian tire .....nothing ....so ordered it online from Grainger 5 cans $50 shipped to my door next couple days should Have them...need to paint up the inner fenders and heater box....apparently this is very close to factory ....
Pics tomorrow.....get caught up in the moment and forget pics...
Never mentioned this at the beginning but I'm only stripping the car down I'm shipping It off for prep and paint...hoping for the end result to be painted Navajo Orange with the 71-72 stripe kit.....and rear spoiler add on....similar to pic attached

Well did the trunk adjustment today best possible it's kinda wide at the top on the pass side but if I move it to take up the gap on the upper right the lower left get too tight for my liking...I can live with it....it better than it was before:)
Found my first sign of filler drivers door no big dents just some small stuff...
Also cleaned the jambs up and then I'll do the doors..but not doing all of it just wanna do the outer area of the door up to the seal area ...
I also did the door pins in the pass door today...pain in the arse to do cause I couldn't get the door open enough to get the upper hinge out..so I had to loosen the lower hinge and finagal it out then adjust the door...
So I've got the hood to do...both fenders lower Valance and tail filler panel
...oh and the rear spoiler so think I'm doing ok for end of November ....

So never heard back from Browns....he never forgot my pics and I never got another email...so done with them
I can get the stuff through Wurth at work actually cheaper thank Browns...anyway I’ll order that Monday.
Today stripped out the fender delivers side found filler in the frt of it minimal again.....
Need to get an adapter for my sandblaster I have so I can do the inner section of the fender that rests against the inner fender...
Pass side fender is stripped out as well no filler at all
I got some Rustoleum semi flat black ...painted both inner fenders engine side only thus far ...I’ll don’t he iwheel well side tomorrow...and the heater box.....happy with the result I bought 5 cans
I’m gonna do the subframe and firewall when I get the car back ....I don’t want a start spraying water and grease All over the place ...

So I got nowhere with the 3m stuff and never heard back so I moved on...
We work with and deal with Wurth at work...talked to our rep and he is a Collison certified tech and has done a lot of panel bonding previous to the sales area...chatted with him for a while and told him about the stuff I got from 3m and what I was using it for and he suggested this expanding foam it's also used for x bracing in hoods trunks door etc...
So he brought me a tube to try ...well gotta say I like the results ...I may have been a little to liberal with it but I like the results....I'll see if I can do Any type of re forming some on a test piece ....
Anyway thought I'd post some pics...

Open the pic on your computer, crop it just slightly, then save it - then upload it...another member here saved me once

It resets the photo cuz the site is picky.
