421 short block
 

I have the opportunity of purchasing a complete 65 421 standard bore short block for $1k. Is that fair market value?

I would say so, even though you will not use the pistons and rods if they are stock!

Those steel rods in those 421 motors are weaker then the cast rods!

Definitely fair, probably closer to the lower end price wise.

Thanks Steve. Although I would go with an after market rod , wasn't aware that 65 rods are considered weak. Thought that was the 58-60 forging?

Rods used in the 1965 421 is the same as used in all other V-8's from 64-79----
If it is a STD bore and the crank is good that is a good price. Should have a Armasteel Crank. Not as nice as a the earlier 990 forged but a good crank worth about $350-$400 itself.

$1,000 bucks? I'd set a land speed record for my wallet.

Some of the early 1965 421 motors where STILL using the basically steel version of the cast armsteel Rods, I know as I have taken apart not one, but two of the 370 hp rated short blocks and both of them where made as such!

I know, I was left scratching my head also!

I think I still have the block production dates of those two short blocks in my info , I will look.

The 990 Crank was only fordge for usage in the SD motors, and I can guarantee you that none, zip zero ever found there way into a production line 421!

The cast rods as was said are all basically the same.

The rubber rods were the Forged Rods that were made from inferior steel and not heat-treated and machined like the 421 SD forged Rods. Those were offered for a few years in the early 1960s. Wide Forging line on the side of the rod.

If you have a rod with a casting line on the side, like Mike Davis posted, then it is a cast rod and all the same basically for all engine applications.

Even the Forged Chinese rods, many times, are better than those forged "Rubber" rods.

Steve, what's so special about the 990 cranks? Didn't they still have the 3.25 journals with oiling issues?
