Supercharged Mickey Thompson 4 cylinder engine

I saw this was posted in the Craigslist discussion in the Lobby. I figured I'd put it here as well, since it's a slant 4 engine:

1960's Pontiac Tempest 4 Cyl race Motor - $5,000 (El Monte)
Pontiac Tempest Vintage Race Motor build by Mickey Thompson

MT Rods Pistons

If it is a M/T engine it was built by Fritz Voight who was his mechanic.Tom

No M/T valve cover.

Might be irrelevant, but makes you wonder.

It may only have MT rods/pistons and the blower adapter. It does not look anything like the MT engine used in his 1961 dragster, so assume a build for a customer.

MT produced his own valley pan, finned valve cover, breathers, 4-71 blower adapter, 3-piece timing cover, and idler adjusting plate - all for the Tempest 4-cyl and each part had a "Thompson" logo. He also offered a street 3-71 blower kit for the Tempest.

Not saying this engine was not built by MT, or his services, but I would expect to see more "Thompson" products?

The only thing I see thats MT is the water fill pipes on each end of the heads. Have never seen an intake like that. Even the timing cover is a stock Pontiac cover thats been cut down to remove all of the coolant passages.

There's a discussion over on the HAMB board about this engine, started by the guy who bought it. He said the seller told him it was last run in 1963 in a lakester at Bonneville named the Baby Whale, owned by Ron Benham. With Burke LeSage driving, it set a speed record of 213.747 mph on August 24, 1963. There are some additional engine pictures posted over there. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...lower.1229803/

Definitely not fritz no blow off plate. Mickey would never run a motor without the safety of having a blow off plate.

And here I thought the Pontiac 4 cyl was a 194. (half a 389).

It was 194ci but M/T stroked them up and down in cubic inches for different classes. I have many doubts about this engine. A Mickey Thompson engine would be dripping with M/T parts or specifically Thompson labeled parts from this era. This engine has a low performance 538177 heads. The short block has been modified to clear the aluminum rods which would be typical for a stroker M/T 4 banger? Sorry I sound like I'm busting b@lls but don't think the whole package is what it's is presented to be?

No first hand knowledge here, but I remember reading in Hot Rod back in the early sixties Mickey was running not only against 1/4 mile records (NHRA), but
international records (FIA) that included standing kilometer (about .6 miles). FIA classes were based on liter engine sizes. 183 cubic inches is 3 liters, a likely class break. It was probably destroked.

The article is an August-1961 CAR LIFE magazine item reprinted in this book that may have been published in mid-1980's

Doug,
Is there anyway you can enlarge the specs on page 4? I remember reading that article years ago. I get a kick out of the speedometer error part.
Thanks!

Looks like just a bunch of pieces semi-bolted together.

Wonder what the purpose of the two speed Ford-o-matic? They weren't anything special although lighter than most cast iron trannys of the day.

Thanks guys, some interesting data for sure. Some numbers are still hard to read but I was able to see a lot more of it.
