Thieves at the GTOAA Nationals!!

Just saw on FB from Jim Taylor (OMT). He is at the GTOAA Nats. Someone broke into his 64 GTO & stole his wood steering wheel!!! Need everyone to keep an eye out for one popping up for sale!! This is around a $3500 dollar item!! Rat Bastard thieves!!!!! Broke a wing vent latch to get inside!

Damn- someone knew exactly what they were going after and how to get it.

Bastards probably talked with him and swiped it when he walked away? What a bunch of crap! Bet there were 2 of them, a look out and the wrench. Couple bullets would have been good!!!

Maybe that's a little bit hasty...
Perhaps some counseling first.

Actually there is a better solution than one bullet each....

Sorry to hear about this. People are effing pigs. It's an absolute fact.

Incidents like this are the reason that we NEVER transport anything on an open trailer that we might have to leave unattended.

Enclosed haulers are more difficult to tow, kill your fuel economy even more, and overall are extra work.

But out-of-sight is out-of-mind.

Hey, I know a guy............ ;)

That really sucks!!! Sorry to hear that.

sdbob 07-06-2021 06:17 AM

Sorry to hear that also.

Brewster 07-06-2021 06:44 AM

Hope they catch the little bastards

JSchmitz 07-06-2021 06:49 AM

I hope they catch the thieves AND he gets his wheel back. I think I'll go tack weld mine! :(

Too much time to be a practical joke by a friend huh. Get em!

I always hate to hear stories like this. But it's made worse when it happens to someone you know and someone like OMT. Hope this has a happy ending. Sorry for your troubles Jim.

So I assume he is now in a scramble to find a wheel to be able to drive the car? Just sucks

I was in SA in the early 90s and had a buddy that had served with Mike Rousseau.

It never amazes me what people do at shows. I had parts and lit disappear at the Dayton Firebird show.
A beating with a steering wheel is way better

That sucks...I'm sorry to hear about this OMT. I've never met him - but in my few interactions with him on this board, he might be the nicest guy on the planet. An original owner car too. I hope they catch the culprits and Jim gets his wheel back.

My thoughts exactly.

My understanding is someone there had a wheel & loaned it to OMT.

Very Sad what is happening in this country. I don't normally post but this kind of thing really upsets me. Thieves seem to be getting braver and braver to take what they want and feel they are entitled to. I hear of things in the swap area at Norwalk being taken every year. We cruise Woodward Ave. every August and have a rule...don't leave our car out of sight, two years ago I heard of two cars that were stolen at the Cruise.. I pray his wheel shows up and the thieves get caught. This is the 1st step as We need to get the word out that this has happened. Cameras are everywhere. Maybe someone saw something? or knows of a 64 wheel for sale, but chances are whoever took it needed it for his car .

mgarblik 07-06-2021 10:39 AM

Of course it's too late now, but on an easy to remove part like that, it would be great to engrave a little ID or initials on the underside somewhere. That way in the lucky chance it is found, the perp might stand a better chance of being held responsible for the theft. Very sorry to hear about this. Shame putting an ID on your own car parts may become a "thing".

Tom Vaught 07-06-2021 10:51 AM

I had a 64 Wood Wheel stolen from my parts collection back in the 1978 time frame.

I had engraved a special logo on the inside of the wheel horn ring.

I saw the wheel some years later at a swap meet in the city and asked a cop who was working the event to help me get my wheel back. I showed him the special mark inside the wheel and he said you might have looked at the wheel 20 minutes earlier and then
claimed the wheels was yours based on the mark.

Your Word vs the Seller's word. And then he said if you engraved your SS Number inside the wheel that does not mean that you did not sell the wheel at some point and had a chance to get the wheel back by claiming it was stolen.

Without a Police Report and Pictures of the part, your word against the guy currently possessing the wheel. And Possession is 9/10s of the law.

Really sad, sorry to hear about OMT's loss.
Tom V.
