How much did you pay for your muscle car back in the day?
 

I was born in 1973. I got my License around 1990. In my early teens I had a few chances to buy 60's Mustangs and Novas for around $500. I bought a few cars just to beat on them in fields. Do you remember driving "beaters" in the fields until they didn't run any more? By the time I got my license, the prices of muscle cars had risen a bit. One of my first registered vehicles was a 350, 77 Buick Skylark I bought for $1500. I drove that up through the first part of my Army enlistment. Fast forward to early 2000s, and I paid $7500 for a 66 Tempest convertible. I hear older friends mention buying muscle cars for far less than $500 back in the day. I'd be interested in what minimal amount of money others had paid for their cars back in the day. What an investment if we had managed to keep them till now.

In 1995 I graduated high school. Picked up a bone stock 1971 Chevelle w/ 350small block off my friends older brother for $500.00.
He was in the adult film industry and threw in a buncha VHS tapes. (Hey I was 17) :D

Put front brake pads on it the night before driving it from Southern CA to Laramie Wyoming where I attended Wyoming Tech.

Best $500 I ever spent!

Not a Pontiac, but a 1961 Corvette, 270HP 283 factory dual quads, 4 speed, soft top only with a crunched passenger side door. I paid $600 for it, threw on a set of studded snow tires and drove it the winter of 1970-71 as my winter beater. Fixed the door and sold it in the spring of 71 for $950. Just makes me want to barf, just think about it now...

My 4 speed, tripower '65 GTO hardtop I currently own and drive cost me $1200 in 1982. With an engine, trans, and rear end rebuild, plus maintenance and a paint job in 1985, I have about $4500 total in the car to date. My '67 GTO convertible that I currently own and drive cost $1800 in 1983. With an enging rebuilt, trans rebuild and a paint job and interior and top (all done in the 80's and '90's), I have about $4500 in it total to date as well. Both cars have never been out of service. I've had a bunch of GTO's, but kept these two. The cheapest was a 4 speed '66 GTO with gauges and a posi for free in 1984 (needed a front clip but was a good driver), and the most I ever paid for a GTO was a '65 4 speed hardtop I bought for $2000 in 1992 and sold later that year for $2800 after putting in a new clutch.

I paid $1300 for my 65 in 1983. Guy wanted $1400 but took 1300. 30 years later still working on it and i hate to even think how much i have spent on it.

My parents paid around $3300 for this 66 new.Still unrestored,wonder what it's worth now...

I paid $500 for this in 1986. A true Judge and sold it 2 years later for 1500. Still kicking myself.

I paid $500 for my 69 GP in 1985, and I still own it today.

In 1975 I was 17, bought a 68 GTO $500
In 1977 bought a 69 GTO $300
In 1984ish bought a 69 GTO $1200
and 11 years ago and counting I bought my 69 GTO $10,000 only GTO at this time.
All of the cars come with stories.

Well by the time I was old enough to drive, the muscle cars had become collectible, but my brothers and l still managed some good deals...I got my 66 GTO convertible for $1000 in 1986 when I turned 16 (well, I bought it from my parents, so maybe that doesn't count). My brother got his 68 Road Runner that he still has for $800 in 1987, and my next brother got his 69 Judge in 1987 for $300 (still has that too - twingtos on this site). The next brother down (I have 4 brothers) got a 69 GS400 4 speed for $800 around 1992 or 1993. My youngest brother got a 68 Dart GTS 340 (missing the engine) for $800 around 2000. I got my 67 Executive wagon free and drove it home in 1998. These cars are all still in the family, and we have bought and sold dozens of others over the years.

new ra3, 4-speed, 3.90 posi, bench seat, fm radio w/rear speaker, silver w/black int--paid $3400 & change in the spring of '69. notes were just under $125 /mo including ins. its the only new car i ever bought. bought lots of hi mile birds & goats in the '70's for $300 or less--some running! back then they were just old wore out cars nobody wanted(except me of course) that seems hard 2 believe, as popular as they are today--but thats the way it was in my neck of the woods--i'm a living witness!:old:

those are some screaming deals! Of course whenever or however you got them that was the going price at that time.

after reading this makes me think i paid too much 3500 for the 65 back in 84
i did also buy a 70 gto 400/400 turbo in 77 for 1500
and i bought a couple chevys cheap a 62 nova w/v8 $550 and a 56 2 door for $500

In March of 74 I paid $ 2500.00 out the door for my 73 GTO. I ordered a 73 GTO 455 SD & by the time the order had been picked up & cancled 4 times & the last when I was yold that they would not put the SD in the 73 GTO I had to take a left over because I was now in the Navy & had to wait until I got back to town on leave to find this out & then had to take a demo for the lot with 8500 miles on it. But I'm happy with it & I still have it today. The $ 2500.00 was with the trade in out my 69 firebird.

Bought my 1965 GTO for $900.00 in 1983 from the original owner.

You forgot about 68 RA II/Auto $900. :mad:

I bought a 70 Judge convertible for $4,300 in 1996 and had it in my physical possession for less than 24 hours - it didn't look like this then. ;)

In 1997 I bought a hoard of cars & parts out of Asbury Park, NJ for $5,500 - it included two 71 HO cars 1-auto, 1-4spd, 1 400/auto 71 GTO with no motor, 71 Lemans Sport 350/auto, a complete WC 455HO motor, M-22, 2 71-72 GTO hoods (1 nos), and 6 pickup truck loads of parts.

Ordered a new 78 T/A WS6 with everything except power door locks, rear console and t-tops from Coggin Pontiac in Jacksonville Florida and paid 5500 before sales tax.
