electric cut outs
 

Has anyone used electric exhaust cut outs? What brand do you recommend? What brand not to use? How long have you had them and how do they work?

These have metal gears and don't melt and strip out like the cheaper brands with plastic gears!
Who would believe some use plastic gears on an exhaust part!!

I would have to check out the brand but they were supposedly the best so I assune they are Quick Time. At first, they were great, then the issues started. Carbon build up caused leaks then the motor went. Now, they are on a shelf in the shop. IMO, they were fun while they lasted and they did not last as long as I the money I had into them. Couple of seasons.

I use the DMH cutouts. Mainly because at the time I lived down the street from Dave that designed and built them. I've had them on my car for more than 15 years now and they still work just fine.

I'm looking to do another set on a different car here and will try a different brand for giggles. May go with an oval style this time for ground clearance.

I also have DMH Cut outs, with over 18 years with no major problems.

Only issue I had was carbon build up on the butterfly's edge. My car ran rich for a few years until I learned how to tune my carburetors.

I solve the issue with a good cleaning and then a light coat of anti-seize on the edge of the mating surfaces. Every couple of years I give them a new coat and have not had any problems since.

I was going to install a stainless steel hi-po exhaust system on my 2017 Ram 1500 but it would cost about a grand and I was afraid it would be too loud for every day use. I figured a cutout after the cat would give me what I needed when towing. Thanks for the input.

DMH on mine, also. Set screw on shaft came loose. I took one of them apart and replaced the screws. They work well.

Have got the oval Dougs on my car. Have had 2 motor failures in 5 years. They do get used quite a bit. Was not the plastic gear that failed, it was actually the motor itself. They are not rotatable so ground clearance can be an issue. Mine get ground down if not careful. If you buy the motors from pertronix or Dougs they are around 20 bucks and are easy to change if going that way.

My DMH's on the Chevelle are still working perfectly after almost 20 years now. I went back and looked, my receipt is from 2003.

Since my last post in this thread from 2018 I bought a set of QTP oval electric cutouts for another car and they've been working fine since. That one is daily driven and I find myself opening them just about every time I drive it.

Dad also bought a set of them for his car not long after and they work fine.
