Old turbo build

I have my build on the other site, wanted to post it here to since I get so many questions. I will try to cut and paste it here.

Here's my story, I have a 1970 Lemans sport, 455,KRE heads, performer rpm intake, mild cam, Cliffs Qjet, tremmec tko 600 and a 12 bolt. The guys I hang out with have deep pockets, 70-150k into there cars, I can not compete with them. (House,4 kids regular job=no money for car.)
Wanted more power for the least amount of money. Searched the internet about turbo charging my Lemans. Been saving and thinking about it for a while. I have been speaking with Jeff Palazzo a hole bunch on this.
I had a set of his headers for a firebird. The passenger side bolted right up. Not so lucky with the drivers side. I am cutting and welding that one in a big way. I am doing away with the rag joint and putting a ujoint on, frees up room.
I was going to go with F.I. from Proff. prod. and use holleys h.p. computer, but for now I decided since I am cash strapped, to go with a CSU carb, Spoke to Kevin, he was great, building me a unit now.
Putting axels and different gears in the car, working out the clutch problem that comes with the extra power I will have now.
It will take me some time, but I'll post as I go.
When it's finally running I will go pro it!
I bought the s475 from jeff, going with a tial waste gate, turbosmart bov. I plan on running 8-10 psi since bottom end is stock.
I at least scare mt big pocket friends after this!

lugging away, got carb hat, gears came yesterday, axels will be here tuesday, I have to pick up the dr. header, made some fit changes. Its tacked if it fits get I'll get it tigged. I cut my manifold today, Ill post some photos later. I paid Kevin from CSU today.
BullChit to anyone who says they are buiding a "budget turbo".
Turbo, wastegate, bov, carb, wideband a/f gauge, boost gauge, flanges, clutch, exhaust............at least $3500-4500, but I guess thats cheap for 300hp more!

The word budget and turbo should never be in the same sentance. What ever you think it will be add 30%.
My radiator(new aluminum northern, 2 months used) had to go, ordered a 28" wide rather than 33" wide. Got the turbo mounted, hood closes. fuel system almost done, Kevin from CSU should be shipping carb shortly.

Had to put the battery in the trunk, mounted the intercooler, turbo in place, radiator to be mounted next, rear back together w/ new gears and moser axels. Working on the cross over. Starting to see the light!

Dropped my driver side header off to be welded and a collector put on 4 weeks ago. I will pick it up this weekend if its not done and sent it elsewhere. I need it to finish the crossover. Sometimes a favor is not a favor.
Getting frustrated. Took a good running car, tied it up and am losing this season. Anyway here is what I got done. working the exhaust next

My driver header went mia at the welders. 2 months to weld a header, can not get in touch with him... I heard he was in the hospital, hopefully nothing serious. But I did make my down pipe. I bought a $59 dollar welding table from H.F. and it saved my knees and back!
I will be going on a mission this week to get my header back or start on a new one!

Well I went thru hell to get my header back. 2.5 months, got it back, it did not look so good but figured who cares at this point. Tried to bolt it to the head, could not get the bolts in on the front port. Was off anout 3/4 of and inch, after waiting that long I wanted to kill something. I had enough, so I got a head, cut the front port off, heated,stretched,hammered... got it welded myself. (should have done that in the 1st place). Alsohad to fix the bolt holes that were "hogged out to fit". Now that there is slag inside because the welder miged them(his tig was broke, LOL) I will get the inside blasted. At least its back in my hands. I will finish the crossover soon I hope and then a few small items and its 1st beating!

Had off today, the wife said have fun in the garage! As you know had a header issue, I will never let anyone have my stuff again unless I am there and can take it when I leave. Cop saw, welder, grinder, wiz wheel. Yes the headers now both got into the turbo. Took me a while. Feels like I took those headers on and off 200 times!

Just added Santuff springs, 90 10 calverts , 50-50 rear shocks. It was cold today, spun the **** out of first gear had to feather it, but it now hooked in 2nd and 3rd when it never did. I made some good progress!!!

I made a bunch of changes to the car. Now I have turbo pistons, a little head and manifold work. I have a meth kit but I will not use it yet, to many other things going on. I took the big brake kit off for a little smaller set up. I put 98-2002 trans am rotors and brakes. I am putting weld wheels on, painting them the color of the car and putting dog dishes on the car.
A guy makes brackets for them. I wanted 15's so I can put bigger tires on and loose some weight! I put 295 60 15's MT drags. I am trying to get it to hook.
12 psi felt real nice before I broke the piston. It was knocking the tires off with the 17's.
Just tonight I finally got all the bearing clearances good, and took the bottom half to get balanced.

Before you fabricate more stuff and pontentially have to do even more stuff over, get rid of the dual plane intake for Turbo work. Put a Hurricane, HSD, or Torquer II on the engine.

This is an old thread I am bringing to this site, I had a hurricane on it now have a Northwind. I did not finish the copy and paste.

Love the thread JS. I can really relate to the amount of work and effort it took to build your project as I am now helping my son turbo his DD (08 SI). His header and charge pipes were bought as a kit (not fabbed as you did) but it's still a PITA to fit/refit, etc.
Well done JS!

Thanks NY! It is funny as I am going over the build, I am like wow, I learned a ton since then about boost, what works and what does not. I can say, in the beginning it was not perfect, but still made a ton of power. Even with the dual plane manifold in the beginning the car was fast. Charlie66 went for a ride and was shocked too!!
