What balancer?
 

Building a 4" stroke 400(69) and want to replace the factory balancer. Who makes the correct 4 hole balancer? The only correct balancer I seem to be able to find is Fluidampr. Are there others? Thanks.

summit had a nice 4 bolt balancer i think it was a power bond in disguise

BHJ also makes a correct 4 hole balancer for the Pontiac. It is designed to be an interference fit, so depending on your crank snout dimensions, you may need to hone the balancer slightly.

I don't think Fluidamper has the correct pulley bolt pattern.

Summit's house damper was made by Pro-Race. Very nice piece and lines up with stock non-AC pulleys.

I currently have a Romac on my 326, made a difference in smoothness compared to my 50 yr old factory damper. I have a 1971 pulley setup, fit perfect. Didn’t have to clearance the pan or alter the pulley in any way. It will need to be honed for your crank.

Another vote for Pro-Race for a quality unit that fits the stock pulleys, crank snout and 11 bolt timing cover properly.

I use a BHJ and have had no problems running to 6800 rpm.

So the question is....pros and cons?

If you are going to use a Factory A/C pulley BHJ can add a slight 45 degree bevel to make it fit better. Their later versions also have something to help prevent outer ring rotation. they can add that to an earlier one.

I have a Romac I've never used-it just looks awful small.

I have always liked my Romac I purchased years ago, probably back in the eary-mid 2000's for my 461. I bought the Steel/Aluminum Outer Shell version. It has been flawless.

The BHJ from Nightmare is 535 $ It has the bevel and Darrin has you mic your snout first and sends you one with the proper press fit. You will need a 300+$ Moroso balancer tool to get one on and off.

I would have updated this post yesterday but I couldn't get on the forums.

The BHJ balancer was $677.50 from BHJ and $535 from Nitemare. They only offer the slip fit balancer as a special order. (you should be using a press fit anyway)


Skipfix&Dragncar...I spoke with BHJ out in California and he gave me Darrins # at Nitemare. I spoke to Darrin and BHJ definitely seems like the way to go, especially if you're planning to have AC.

Does any other tool work for installing the balancer or do you have to use the Moroso tool?

According to Darrin, "Powerbond ,Romac and Prorace are all offshore balancers".

I have a FluidDampr on my 455. But to be honest, I can't remember if I had to adjust the bolt pattern at all or not. It's been a few years now

Romac is offshore, but it’s made in Australia. I’d wager Powerbond is made in China, not sure about Prorace. That’s a big reason I went with Romac.

zippy...Interesting. When I called BHJ(California) they specifically said not to use a Fluidampr. I'm glad your seems to be working for you.

You don't have to use the Moroso tool. I used the harbor freight copy on my BHJ that I got from Nitemare and it worked fine.

Definitely measure your crank snout and the balancer. I want to say that Darrin wanted around .007 interference fit on this. On my stock 455 crank, I didn't need to have the balancer honed. If you have an eagle crank, you may need to do so.
