1970 GTO value

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

I am looking at a 1970 GTO to purchase. Front clip is off the car. Interior completely out. Missing front seats. No motor or trans. So far no pics of interior panels or rear seat, dash pad looks rough so the interior panels are likely not great. Needs trunk floor. No A/C. Manual drum brakes.

Any ideas on a price range?

Thanks, Matt

Sharing the asking price and posting a few pictures would be a big help.

Looks like it’s an incomplete basket case with body rust issues. A huge amount of work and expense to make it a car again, like 50k+ (very low estimate) doing all the work yourself.

Unless you can get it for somewhere in the range of cheap to free walk away. Cheap is less than 2k and even that’s too much in my opinion.

Being a low-option GTO (from what you know so far) with none of the drivetrain and a rough body makes it essentially a parts car, pay accordingly. Make sure you have the funds, ambition and a place to take on a huge and time consuming project before making a commitment.

Not all of them can be saved, as much as we’d all like to be able to do that.

He is asking 10,000

Whats the best way to post pics here? Is there a thread covering it? Thanks for moving the question to the right forum.

Use the ‘manage attachments’ down below when you create your next post and download from your phone or computer photo album.

Honesty he’s a dreamer and you’ll be wasting your time trying to get this GTO in such poor condition for a fair price. A car that’s been torn that far apart is usually missing a bunch of hardware and small items that will nickel and dime you to death.

The paint and interior color combination has a significant bearing on value as well as manual or automatic transmission.

does it have a build sheet or phs? if not, maybe start with that.

DavesGTO 01-23-2023 06:47 PM

If you got it for free it wouldn’t be worth it, IMO. Way too much time and money to save a base car.

Reminds me of this thread concerning a ‘69 GTO. Same story just one year older:

The seller must have been watching the Mecum Auction last weekend.....

DavesGTO and b-man both hit the nail on the head.

From your pics, it looks like this GTO really only has only one thing going for it: It was once a manual transmission.

My 2 cents: a green over green base model GTO is not a horribly desirable combo.

There were many THOUSANDS of them made in that color combo, so there is zero 'rarity factor'. That's why someone painted it white.

I have nothing against green GTOs. I say that as someone who has two green 1970s now - a pepper green/green vinyl/green guts and a verdoro green over black. I'llchoose the black interior all day long.

Too many negatives: rusted out trunk floor, missing drivetrain, manual brakes, no AC, no seats, probably trashed interior.

If I was offered that car for $5k, I'd have to do some serious thinking about it. $10k is way too much for what is there.

There is a reason some of them aren't restored. $$$ !!

Reality is that it's better for those to become organ donors for the nicer projects.

Good luck!

while i agree, even at less than half his asking price, it doesn't make dollars and cents to do a full restoration on it.
on the other hand, some very plain cars came through with some not so plain engines. if it's the original hood, you could look for evidence of a pan. it's hard too see in the picture for, but those engine mounts kind of look like 455 ones. maybe.

while unlikely as it may be, how would you definitavely know with out a phs. if it did turn out to be something special, even with out it's born with drive train, it still could be worth it to some one to fix it up and enjoy it not as an investment.

Forgive my ignorance, What is the difference in the engine mounts? When I swapped my 72 LeMans 350 for a 455 did not change the mounts.

b-man 01-24-2023 12:25 PM

The 455 A-body cars used special wider engine mounts.

While it’s true they’re not necessary to use when you convert a non-455 car to a 455 that’s how they came when ordered from the factory. When trying to identify a factory 455 car we look for those wider mounts.

MatthewKlein 01-24-2023 01:33 PM

Thanks for the explanation

Bruce Meyer 01-24-2023 02:27 PM

The mounts look like 400 ones to me. You would have to measure to be sure. The 455 cars came with 12 bolt rear ends. You might want to check that. IMHO that car is only worth around 2500. If even that. I would only buy it if I had a stockpile of spare parts that I didn't need and would work in a 70 and I was an Ace at bodywork and welding.

John Milner 01-24-2023 04:06 PM

In my opinion, for an entry level GTO, you would have to look at the parts that are with the car and place a value on those and that should be around what you would pay. Value would be added if it had its number's matching drivetrain. Value would also be added if it is a ram air car.
