1970 Shifter linkage slop
 

Hey guys. I have a 1970 Gto with original 4 speed shifter and linkage mated to a Muncie transmission. This is a project vehicle that I have been tinkering on. The other day I went to move the car and the shifter lost tension.

I am not new to muncie 4 speeds so I knew immediately the linkage clip popped off and shift rod came undone. I went ahead and bought new brass linkage bushings as I am used to, but when I crawled under the car I found the factory Pontiac Competition Plus shifter does use type of bushings. They instead use a rubber type with washers?

My question is.....Can I take the shift arms and shifter down and drill the holes bigger and use the brass bushings and hurst clips?

Has anyone done this in the past and how did it work?

Thank you for the reply but that did not answer my question at all. I know how to drill holes in hardened steel.

My question was if this modification will work on factory shifter and rods to use he Hurst brass bushing kit.

Personally I think there will be no issues and it will be fine.

I will be doing this tomorrow. Will post back with results.

As you found out, you cannot install aftermarket Hurst shifter bushings on OEM HCP shifter arms.

I have not heard of anyone drilling the OEM HCP shifter arms to fit the aftermarket bushings, but I believe it is fairly common for the OEM HCP shifter arms to be swapped out for aftermarket HCP arms.

Will keep you posted. Just drilled everything. Bushings fit nice and snug. About to put the arms back on. Fingers crossed haha

Ps. I not only had to drill the shift arms on the transmission I also drilled the shifter itself.

Easy peasy! All done and shifter feels great. Hardest part was doing this under the car with only 1 jack and stand under the front.
