going to Maaco, 2022

1 Attachment(s)
About ten years ago, i had two of my cars and one of my friends cars painted at my local Maaco.
Single stage metallic urethane. They said they added clear to it.
Turned out great.
Last year I sent a friend with a Grabber Maverick to another Maaco, near him.
Single stage Orange.
It cost about $1100. It looks OK. a bit thin in some places.

I brought my car back to my local Maaco for an estimate, yesterday. It had some scratches, etc.; nothing much wrong.

My arrangement:
No body work.
I will do ALL of the sanding and disassembly of wing, mirrors, grilles, rockers, etc.
No jambs. ( i'd just done them last year)
No Bake.
Base coat/ Clear coat. Same color
$2400
I gave my deposit, and scheduled for July 27th.
Photo below: ten year old Maaco single stage metallic.

Good decision, two of my friends had their cars done at Maaco, both turned out nice!

The quality of Maaco jobs can vary significantly. If you are looking for a quick, driver quality job, it can work. A couple of the Maaco shops around me are pretty marginal.. Used one with pretty poor results....wouldn't use them.

Hi F ROCK,
What Maaco was it? I’m curious as I’m in NJ also. Thanks!

TAKerry 06-06-2022 08:04 AM

I almost did the same when I painted my 77 t/a. I talked to a shop and asked specifically if they did special projects. The owner took me in the shop where they had a 442 and an old Charger. Said he had one guy that liked doing that stuff and took extra care. I worked out a deal and was ready to go. About the same as what you did. I was going to paint all of the jambs, have the body all but ready in primer, all the loose stuff off. I think he quoted me $2500 (this was 7 yrs ago). After priming, and painting the jambs I decided to finish myself.

But I would certainly not having a problem entertaining the idea. These guys know a spray gun better than most. I think you need to check them out to find the right one though. I have talked to others regarding my daily and did not get as fuzzy a feeling.

I look at it this way, these paint jobs are at least 50% better than all the cars at the show, and def better than driving around with something that is crappy looking, plus one doesnt have to worry themselves driving around with a $20k plus paint job.

TinInjun, Depending on where you are in NJ, the guy that was going to do my car is in Newark, DE. Not far from S. Jersey.

F ROCK 06-06-2022 08:21 AM

TAKerry, I agree.
TinInjun; I'm using the Maaco near Atco. They've done great jobs for me. That last time it cost $700; couldnt beat that!
The Maaco that my friend used was in lawnside; not such a nice place.

I always do my own body work. I'd paint it too, if I had a nice garage.
That little mexican guy in my local Maaco paints 6-8 cars per day lol, and they look real nice. I have confidence.

Maaco can turn out some pretty slick paint jobs. The local one near me does a lot of classics, and they look damn good.

TAKerry 06-06-2022 03:08 PM

When I was looking I was straight up with the guy. I told him I did not want the $599 paint job. I was willing to pay more, but it had to be a good job. Thats when he took me behind the scenes. I think if youre up front and let them know your expectations you should know within a few sentences talking to them if they can do the job.

Good Luck F ROCK, I am sure you will get a good job, and it wont take 12-24 months in a shop to do so.

MAACO has the benefit of economy of scale on their side. Since they don't typically have to work in the realm of perfection, can assembly line the process across several different body guys, painters and booths you can get in and out quicker for cheaper. Of course having the AAMCO cash cow to subsidize the brand is likely helping as well.

Many years ago a friend had one of their $400.00 deals done on a 91 Nissan Maxima. I think it was single stage, but it actually came out looking great. In fact most of the stuff I've seen come out of MAACO I would classify as good driver quality. "Showable" in your local shows, but certainly not "Show Quality." Considering I've been recently quoted between 15k-20K for a fairly standard paint job, if you can get good quality in the 2500-4000 range, you're doing pretty good!

About 15 years ago I brought my Monte Carlo SS to a Maaco. I supplied the paint(Glasserit, {Spelling}), clear and chemicals, I did the body work and disassembled the car. They charged me $1000.00 and the paint job came out great! No complaints. That painter squirted cars every day.

Maaco near Atco (Berlin actually) does nice work
I can’t speak for Lawnside.
Maaco in Cinnamison NJ also does nice paint jobs but you get what you pay for.
If you want a nice job it’s not going to cost you 1000 bucks
Another key to a good job is to do your own prep work

F ROCK,

I used the same location years ago on a 75 Grandville Conv. It was very reasonable $1800.00, base/clear. Had some dirt and a few runs but once wet sanded and buffed, wow, looks great!

That's particular location seems to do quality work.

That’s awesome- so glad it turned out nice.

I’ve had several cars painted at Maaco and have been very happy. The owner used to ask that I bring the car back after assembly to park it out front for attention. It worked out well for both of us.

These were all painted at my friends Maaco

OCMDGTO 07-29-2022 09:35 AM

Car looks great and really nice color

tjs72lemans 08-01-2022 02:17 PM

That looks great. I also like that color. It reminds me of a 32 Sedan Delivery in Car Craft back in 1979 painted Jade metallic. I always wanted to paint my 55 Delivery that color. I painted it cobalt blue pearl since it was very reasonable paint cost wise rather than a special mix.

Depends on the Maaco. Don't think the corp part has anything to do with it.
This was a Maaco a few years ago.

F ROCK 08-02-2022 05:04 PM

looks nice.
we should probably have a maaco directory that rates the different maaco shops.
I'd definitely rate the Berlin shop much higher than the Lawnside shop.

To add a few more details;
Berlin Maaco is clean inside, very clean. It's the cleanest shop I've ever seen.
I have used them many times; but now they have new owners and management.
My salesman, Rick, happens to own a '64 GTO. He was going on vacation. We scheduled my car for after his return,
so he could oversee the job.
My car can sometimes be fussy. One wrong pump of the pedal and it floods. Rick drove my car through the line.
As mentioned, I've used this shop several times for quick, econo paint jobs. This was the best masking job they'd ever done. Some paint on the exhaust pipe, a dusting of clear overspray on the tires, but nothing much. cleaned up easily. The engine compartment was sealed off pretty well despite the ram air scoops being open and the hood tach removed. I didnt notice any overspray under the hood.( last time the paint blasted right through the hood scoops, onto my fan shroud and detailed engine, but that was actually at a body shop, not maaco)

Some orange peel but not much...not bad at all.
Also this:
I wanted my car stored inside.
I had blocked the car down, but after sitting in the sun for a few hours, the metal flakes would squeeze out of the old paint making the surface feel prickly, and i'd have to sand it again.
...And it didnt have door handles or locks on there so security was an issue.
...And I didnt want them sanding it.
...And I didnt want it baked. Rick agreed to paint it at the end of the day, and store it overnight in the open oven.
I'm a pain in the ass.
Rick called me immediately after it was painted and told me i could pick it up in the morning.
