Biggest wheel for 1964 conv a body

Question for 64 owners- what is the biggest (widest) wheel tire combo that will fit in back?

I’ve had 275/60-15 tires on 8” wheels.

Also 275/40-18 tires on 9” wheels.

Of course the wheel backspacing dimensions are critical because it’s a very tight fit.

No outer fender lips were harmed. :)

My Le Mans convertible isn’t pushing the limits with 215/75-14 tires on 14x6” Hurst wheels.

Here’s a 275/60-15 (M&H bias ply), on a Billet Specialties StreetLite wheel (15x8 w/5.5 backspace). Barely fits on front side as well as back side.
As B-man said, backspace is critical. Also critical is which rear axle that you’re using. I have the wider 66-72 rear, (1/2” wider per side), in my 64.
If you have the narrow 64-65 rear, you may need a 1/2” spacer to run a 5.5”backspace, (or try to find a 8” wheel with a 5” backspace.

That's one of the best if not the best wheel/tire/fitment combinations I've seen.

Custom built steel wheels

Built to match the width of the narrowed 9” Ford rear end.

I narrowed the Ford 9 in my ‘64 GTO that was already installed in the car when I bought it to precisely center the wheel/tire combo in the wells. I was able to stuff a 10x28 slick on an 15x8.5” Centerline without doing anything other than a little light hammering on the inside inner fender tub.

I liked the rear wheels so I modified the axle housing to put the wheels where I wanted them.

Later on I went to custom built steel wheels built to similar dimensions to the Centerlines I replaced.

Thanks for the pix guys. Helpful. Cars look great...

255/45/18 on 18x8 on all four corners. Nobody said it was possible. When my car comes back in 5 weeks I will send you pics

Love to see it

Remember the spindles on these only take small bearings (3/4" and 1-1/4"). If you go bigger than 17's I would go AFX spindles.
