I'm planning on swapping my POS muncie with the Richmond 5 speed!

Anyone using the 5 speed, if so, whats your opinion.

I plan on flogging it at the strip with a 150 shot of spray for next year!

I've run a Nash (Richmond) 5spd on a few street/strip GTOs over the years and I've known a few others who have too. It's a nice trans but, gear the car accordingly. I have a customer who put one one his mildly stock '78 T/A and left in the 3.42 gear. The car went slower with the 5spd and he never used 5th gear at the track. Depending on your combo gear it taller than mornal because of the 3.25 1st gear. A 2.56 through 3.08 may be best. The 6 speed for about another grand can be a waste of money. I know of a guy who runs one in his GTO without benefit. The Pontiac has a flat torque curve and does not need that many gear changes. Now, if you are running "Z" rated tires and want to run at long periods at over 140, then the 6 speed is for you.

One thing to look at too is the lower the first gear usually the lower the torque it can handle. I know they told me that with their drag/roadrace version(straight cut gears no synchros or speedo)They have custom gears available, especially if you order one new.Could get what ever you want.

Box is great but from what I understand Richmond dont sell a straight cut non syncro version anymore (Shame on them) so the helical unit is the choice

As others mentioned whatch the ratios. With a 455 and a 3.25 first in the boxes it gets real easy to wreck some driveline parts (if you ever get it to hook up)

Look the the ratio of 4th with the boxes to determine your "real" drive ratio in top at the track. Mine is still 1.16 (5th is 1:1) which calcs out to around a 3.7 with the 3.20 which should be good

Starting line ratio will be 10.4:1 which will be alot more usable than the 13.35 or 12.1 we have used in the past. More gear slowed the car down so were going in the other direction

I think you are right they were phasing out the straight cut boxes a few years ago when I bought some gears for one. They weren't available complete anymore. Now a its a 2.88,2.22,1.77,1.33,1.00 box.I think Jerico and Liberty boxes took away their market.

It shares alot of similarities with the street box. With some BIG snap ring pliers you can swap any part in it.

for serious drag racing with a stick shift I think the Jerico cluthless is the answer.Anyone that was at Norwalk and saw Ric and Dave Johnson run 9.0s on the throttle in their Pro Nostalgia cars can attest to the strength and smoth shifting on the gear box.

G-force who makes Prostock clutchless trannies can also put you something together for just a little more than a Jerico and a lot less than a Liberty.

I agree on the later model aftermarket boxes for "serious" racing but for a whole lot less coin I feel the richmond would be just fine in this application. Spend the extra money saved by buying the richmond on a good clutch, scattersheild and driveshaft. (Hows your diff ???)

I probably would be running a Jerico here to if they were not $7000 NZD compared with a couple for a Good used Richmond. (Used Jericos seem to go for the ame price as new here LOL)

Get the right clutch and you will be shifting (not banging) gears for along time

You rest your leg for the next run. The clutchless has one drawback,it can't be used on the street-you can't downshift it and it won't stay in anygear except 4th without a load on it.It's hard to drive even in the pits,but if you want a tenth off your et,it's the hot ticket.

On of our racers in Pontiac Drag Days here in So Cal broke the Jerico he had behind his 455. He's using an automatic now. Pontiac torque.
