I was goofing around today and tried a couple of different wheels on my car.

I have seen some discussion on using BMW wheels, so tried on one of the summer wheels from my 330i. Wheels are 18x8.5 w/ 235-40-18 tires (only a little over 25" tall). Backspacing is about 5.5" and it fit well in the rear and could have been 2 inches wider with this backspacing. The 120mm bolt circle fit with no problem.

Next I tried on some Camaro SS wheels I have. These are 17x9.5 w/ 275-40-17's. Rubbed in the back so would need spacers.

Here are my normal wheels -- 17x8 Boyd's with 255-50-17's in the rear.

I had also taken off the chrome wheel opening molding in the other pic's. I like the more modern look with no trim, but the paint in messed up a little under so will probaly leave on.

I like the BMW wheel, but there is too much wheel well and not enough wheel/tire.

I agree - these tires would be way too small for the GTO. In the rear would need something like 255-45's on the 8.5" rim (with an inch less backspacing) or better yet 285-40's on about a 10" rim. There are some staggered set-up's (18x8 front / 18x10 rear) for 5-series BMW's that have backspacing that I think would work really well.


As for the color, it is hard to see in this light (and in photos in general). It was painted in the early '80's (well before I got it). A former owner owned a body shop and did it to show off his work. It's has about 8 coats of lacquer candy apple over yellow pearl on top of Cadillac Firemist Gold. The guy who painted it said there was no way to duplicate with the paints available today.

Just went to check what Andrew Borodin is running. He has 295-45's on 18x10.5 rims for his '70.

I know this is an old post, but JPJ did those camaro wheels fit well in the front too or did they need spacers too. Can you give me an idea of how much spacer is needed?

I never tried them on the front, but would need spacers for sure. I think the backspacing on these is a little over 7", plus with a 9.5" width it would be a very tight fit so spacing would have to be pretty accurate.

There are a lot of nice wheels out there now, so can probably find something to fit without spacers (although the late F-body wheels can be found for really good prices). I'm still thinking I may do staggered 18" BMW 5-series fitment wheels at some point.
