I have a set of 1976 6x heads with a stamp code of "8" on the side and they have a hump in the middle of the exhaust port. I have done some pocket porting to them and I want to know if you can grind the hump in the exhaust port down and blend it in?

Yes, I did the same with my 6X-4's.

Yes, any improvement you can do to the roof of the port will help. That bump is there for EGR ports on heads so equipped.

I believe the bumps that he is referring to are the smog tube provisions cast there for air injection tubes, they can still be cast into the head even though the car did not have air injection, the ones just inside the exhaust runner from manifold side.

I ground down the humps in one head and it sure looks alot better without them in there. Thanks for the response.

Peculiar. Do all these 6X heads come with that? I don't recall my set having any humps in the exhaust ports.
