I am building a 69 GTO for strip/street (note mainly strip because it eats race gas).

I have read up on many of the alternatives for replacing the front drums with some sort of discs. Mainly the focus hear seems to be handling and braking, not really my main concern as long as whatever I get will stop faster than the drums in the run-off area.

My main concern is WEIGHT. What kits or cross-breed combination is going to allow me to do the swap and save the most weight off the front end?

My bet would be on the Baer or Wilwood kit. They use a lighter weight hub instead of a hub/rotor combo. Plus the calipers are aluminum instead of Cast Iron.

I have read that the original drums are lighter than stock discs, but know nothing about aftermarket discs.

Thanks Mr_GTO, excellent point about the Wilwood kit, plus it is "ONLY" about $650 (not including a new master cylinder.) I will have to check out the Baer one too.

Shadowjack - I have read that too. It makes sense since the stock disc rotor weighs more than a stock drum; and the stock caliper definitely weighs LOTS more than the stock drum innards. But it has been 15 yrs since I drove this car on the street and I STILL remember how WAY scary as far as stopping with those drum brakes. I don't even want to try that from 130 miles an hour or so, especially should me or the guy in the other lane be having any "problems."

I too am interested in this conversion. I am about to pull the trigger on the conversion set from www.inlinetube.com or the A123 set from SSBC. Cost of the set is $830.

the weight of a ssbc kit is 125 pounds per the ups shipping tag on the box.
I was wondering today how much weight I have added by doing this swap. I know it has to be pretty significant because even the master cylinder seems to be twice as heavy.plus the added weight of calipers and the rotor are heavier than the drums.

I'll check tonight and see if all the old components can be wieghed.
