I finally got around to installing my new motor which was built over last winter.
The cam I'm using is the -8 grind, .440 lobe w/ the extremely quick ramp. It has 280 deg. @ .050 and has .704" at the valve. It's been a while since my last roller motor blew apart and thus, I forget the characteristics of my old cam. I have the lash set right on the money and the valve train noise is significant. I vaguely recall that's what the last one sounded like. However, I question the magnitude. Is this normal with this quick of ramp as the valves are being slammed open/closed??? You can actually hear the valve train over the exhaust note which is obnoxious to say the least. Thanks, Eric. |

check ur clearance between the lifter and lifter bores?

I know what I have to look forward to now. Thanks for the heads up. AS for what it sounds like, I only know somewhat smaller solids, one of mine was noisy like that. I swear I heard every valve closing.

J.C. The lifters slid in and felt "normal" as my last set of lifters. I'm using Crower rollers and and lifter brace.

One of the things I have found with excessive valvetrain noise are the rocker arms themselves. 9 times out of 10 I have found that from alot of abuse on a roller rocker arm, wether alot of street miles or alot of passes with aggressive solid roller cams is that the bearings in the rocker arm body are worn. Pull the rockers one by one and hold the rocker firmly in your hand and try to move the bearing assembly up and down in the rocker.Alot of times excessive wear will create alot of valvetrain noise, even though the lash is not too loose. On a side note, the roller cam you speak of, the HI-TORQUE 440 lobe from Comp. is an extremely aggressive cam. I would be careful useing this camshaft in the factory blocks, as they will blow out the lifter bores very quickly. I have seen them break even with the lifter bore braces. I can rule out the rockers by process of elimination. I ran them on another motor and they did not make the noise I am hearing. Additionally, they are Crower stainless and I don’t think they are worn.
Joe, when you say they the –8 lobe will break lifter bores even with a brace, can you shed some light on the probability? Did you see this 1x, 10x, 50x? Thanks, Eric. |

Fasteddy, I do have a brace that holds all the lifter bores from KRE.

The 440 Hi-Torque line is the second most aggressive lobe Comp makes (the TK line is the most aggressive). These lobes get from .020" to .050" in only 28 degrees. I assume you have checked to see that the lifters arent tapping on the valley cover? Are you running at least 230# on the seat?

Tempest455, the unique thing about the back bone is that it not only supports all the bores but it also supports the full length of each bore--not just a 1/4 inch or so like the other braces.

Tom, the valley is a Nunzi fab aluminum I used with the last roller motor. Plenty of room w/ the Crower lifters.
The springs are Comp 999-16, 228 lbs @ 1.85". Anyone else using this cam lobe with excessive noise? |
Noise is a relative term. What is noisy to one is normal to another.
Then you have the <span class="ev_code_RED">tight lash</span> rollers to solve a lot of issues. |

A lot of manufactures are going to this to control the lifter on the ramp, bounce, less spring pressure, etc. Mainly got it's start in circle track, but now making it's way into street grinds and drag race applications. Most cams run arond .026 lash with the tighter grinds running anywhere from .016 to .020 without giving up performance. Use a few on street grind with lower duration #'s in the 240 and less and they sound quieter then rhoades lifters. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...s/icon_eek.gif Yea, I see my avatar is gone.
