Need help installing rocker moldings on 69 I have the moldings and ordered the clip kit from PY, which of course came with no instructions. There are 4 clips for each side, 4 long pieces for each side and two white plugs. Can anyone tell me the locations for these? PY should really include instructions. I assume the long pices go on the front fender, then the clips go along the rocker under the door. Where does the white plug go? What about the locations for the clips? Any help or pics woulfd be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I got the same kit with no instructions either> The 4 smaller clips lock in on rockers and held with hex -head screws. The long ones I believe just go on fender s and front of quater in front of rear wheel...I think. The 2 white plastic plugs.. I HAVE NO IDEA !
CAN SOMEONE HELP US 2 Unfortunate fellows ? |
Don't the two white plugs go where the screw hole in the trim piece is. Haven't paid a lot of attention, but seems that's what I remember when I've removed them.

I thought the white plugs went where the srew holes in the rocker trim are too. However, there were only 2 white plugs in the clip kit, and there are 4 holes in the rocker trim (two per side - one in front and one ion back). So, if this were the case there should be 4 plugs. I just wish PY and others would include instructions for these trim parts - it's hard if you're doing one for the first time.

The 2 plugs are for the holes in the front fenders. The four clips are spaced out down the length of the rocker panel. The first one mounts at the front end of the rocker panel (not the rocker moulding) just behind the front fender. The longer clips hook on the bottom edge of the trim (after the mouldings have been hung on the other clips) and then screw into the bottom of the rocker panel just behind the bottom edge. The long clips are located approximately ( working from memory here http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_wink.gif) near the front and rear of the doors. If body work hasn't been done to your car you should be able to see or feel the holes from the old trim.
I hope this helps you guys. |
Thanks goatless - that helps a lot. Since body work was done on my car all the holes are covered up so I'm starting from scratch. Your info tells me where to mount the clips. Thanks again

Goaless thanks for the info. I believe I understand it all now except....yes except.
What do yo mean by "The longer clips hook on the bottom edge of the trim (after the mouldings have been hung on the other clips) and then screw into the bottom of the rocker panel just behind the bottom edge. " I thought the lon clips just would screw to body on front of quarter panle section and bottom of front fender. Yes. from body work...some of my holes are gone but 80% is still there. Sorry hate to be a pain in the ass. |
What Goatless is talking about is after you have the trim cliped on to the four rocker mounts & the two screw into the fender & rear rocker, ther are two clips that hook onto the bottom edge of the trim, then scew into the underside of the rocker. Basically the screws for this go stright up from the bottom of the car. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks 68ragtop - that was the final piece of the puzzle for me. I just wonder why they only had the white plugs for the front screws on the fender (the ones that gor through the rocker) and not the rear?
|
One more question - how in the hell do these rocker moldings go on the clips? Do they slide on? I can slide the clips on the moldings, but don't see how they could clip on over the clips. So, do you mount the clips and then slide the moldings over them?
PY - Spend the souple pennies and include Instructions for these! |
The moldings "hang" (from the top) on the clips that are screwed into the face of the rockers and then the bottom is secured with the two clips that screw to the bottom of the rocker.

Has anyone ever noticed that the rockers on their car are not straight? I used a straight edge on my rockers & noticed both sides tip in towards the front fender. The bottom edges of the doors are straight, so not sure why they are like that. Another reason the doors & fender gaps are so hard to make fit nice. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif
