bout a month ago I bought a 65 GTO post. the seller said it was areal GTO.To make a long story short I found the amn who did the original restoration and he said the car was a Tempest. He did a frame off in the mid 90's and put in a 455, 4-spd and 292 posi. He also converted to front disc brakes. The car is in very good shape and runs out almost perfect. The carb needs work and I had planned on getting a new carb.
My question is what is this car worth? If it were a real GTO what would it be worth?
I am going to talk to the seller and see if we can work something out and I need some figures to work with.

A real GTO is worth twice a lemans in the same condition. Just look up NADA pricing.

Ebay will give a good idea if you watch it long enough. One it Wyoming isn't gonna go as high as one in PA or Texas typically.

Before we go any further, what did you pay for the car (in general terms)? 5K? 10K? 20K?

I assume that the seller also told you the 455 engine and the disc brakes were not stock?

If the car is really in good shape and you paid
5K to 15K for it, (a really nice Lemans/Tempest
will go for that too) I would not worry about it. I would move on with life.

If you paid 20K plus for this car I would talk
to the seller about some adjustments to the car price.

If the seller balks about the adjustment then
you are stuck unless he advertised the car in
a written or electronic publication which would
then be fraud. Even then it would cost you the difference in the car to hire a lawyer to get your money back. "His word against yours" and
"he was told that it was a GTO by the previous
owner" The word is "LET THE BUYER BEWARE" and
it is your responsibility to know what you are buying.

A GTO and Lemans (cloned) will be worth almost the same if the car is "right" and you find the right buyer for it.

Been there, done that.

What Tom has stated price wise is accurate. It really comes down to what you're happy with and if you overpaid in general or not for the car.

Thanks for all the info. I talked with the seller and he agreed to but back the car if that is what I want. I also talked to the original builder of the car and he is willing to pay me what I have in it.
I gave $12,000 and have put about $500 more in it.
Here is a picture. WHat would you all do. Keep it or return it?

Lets see some more pics before I decide... interior, engine compartment, trunk, underbody etc.

OK, Here are a few more pics. The car also came with a set of new Coker redlines on rallye 1 wheels complete with trim rings, center caps and lug nuts.
It also has the Hurst shifter. As far as I can tell the rear quaters wer the only sheet metal replaced. The hood came off a 66 GTO.
I don't have any pics of the undercarriage but it is as clean as the rest of the car.
There is a small dent on the left rear qtr and on the roof above the passenger door.The rear taillight chrome shows some wear. The worst damage is a small rust blister on the bottom rear of the driver's door. It's about 3" long and 1/2 inch wide. It has not blistered through the paint.

I don't think that 12,000 is a bad deal for that car.
It seems nice enough to take to local shows etc, with some PY restoration parts, and some detailing, you could get the underhood looking more factory (if that is your goal)

Unless something alot better has come along, I'd keep it for now.

$12,500 is not bad to have in that car, especially if you enjoy driving it. With what real goats are bringing these days it makes you almost afraid to put one in the road. I don't see anything wrong with a cloned goat if the cloning is accurate and complete.

$12,500 is definitely not a lot to have in that car...I have more than that in my '65 Post clone and it isn't close to finished yet. If you drive and enjoy the vehicle, I say keep it. The value certainly won't go down, it just may not go up as fast as a real one.

I have a 65 convertible clone that the previous owner paid $10,000 for. I got the car from him as an employment bonus and I put $4000 into it replacing tranny, restoring susp, disc brakes, restoring tripower, wiring etc...(it never ends lol). based on what you spent and the pictures, you got a pretty good deal and I would keep it. Even when/if you resell it, a good condition cloned Tempest is still going to appreaciate in value and you should be able to at least break even. Good luck,
