i know they used different blocks different years, i've been to several websites and have gotten contrasting infomation, im looking into buying a YX code engine, supposably from '74, is there a reliable place i can look up this engine code, or can someone fill me into what engine it is? 400 / 455 ?

I beleive 400 or 455 should be cast into the block on the left(driver)side. Near the front of the block. As far as the code someone will be along and help.

its a 74' 455 block. "455" should be cast into drivers side of block near front

To add confusion, it could also be a 301. Determine the year of the block first. Look for the date casting located near the distributor.

As was said,usually a CID is cast in the side of the block for the newer engines.
Look on the back of the block,below where the passenger head mounts.There should be a cast number,which is the block casting number. With that you can determine what block it is. With that # go here.
