Has anybody here ever installed a LeCarra Steering wheel on a 64 Lemans / Tempest / GTO? I bought the wheel, column adaptor, and horn button recently. The adaptor is the wrong one. In working with LeCarra Customer Assistance and Tech Support, I have sent them pictures of the column, horn follower, and the original wheel along with a diameter measurement of the column jacket. They are baffled. They don't know what will work and are now telling me they will need to make a "custom adaptor". My car is an original, unmolested 59,000 mile stocker so I know the column hasn't been swapped out. Does anyone remember the part number of the adaptor they used, or am I the first person on the planet to try and install a LeCarra wheel on a Pontiac??

I can't speak for Lecarra, but I put a Grant afermarket wood wheel in my '64, and it went right on with no problems. Perhaps you should go to a Grant, and let Lecarra solve their problem. Good Luck.

Do you have a picture you can post of that wheel?or how about what model#so I can look it up.I'm just curious of the style you want to install, pondering a wheel swap myself.

Mavrik,
The wheel is a Mark4 elegant. But the wheel's not the problem. The adaptor that is listed for "most" GM cars 49-66 is too large in diameter for the steering column ( I measured with calipers @ 3 9/16"), and the horn follower conversion wire to their horn button - or whatever the name is, is for the later style cars that have a brass ring mounted in the column itself. Mine has a brass post in the column, and the ring is on a plastic disc that fits around the shaft, under the wheel. What amazes me is that Lecarra can't find the correct adaptor. I've had excellent results with them before. I've included a shot of the follower. Anybody seen this before?? |
I found a different listing in Grant's equipment that includes 64-66 GTO only. I heard back from LeCarra today, and they are going to make a custom adaptor using me as the guineapig. After this, they will have the right listing for our cars.
