I just replaced the passenger side header gasket. I have the 389 and there is virtually no room for the header to go. It was a PITA, but how do I do the driver side with the steering shaft right in the way? Do I have to remove it? I don't think there is any other way, but was wondering if anyone had the same problems?

Pull the long bolt out of the drivers side motor mount. Jack up the engine so it piviots on the pass. side mount. I would also pull the 2 bolts out of the tranny mount so you don't stress it when you jack up the engine.

Jack it up as far as it will go. You should have enough room now to unbolt the header. Take your time. This is a real pain the arse job.

I have that huge steel crossmember on the frame that runs right underneath the engine.

I've put a floor jack under the balancer. You could always put a cherry picker on it and lift it up if you don't feel comfortable using the balancer.

Jack & block of wood under the pan. When doing drivers side remove starter. Mine comes right out ('67) w/o jacking up the engine. If 4-speed remove z-bar. Reinstall copper and this will be the last time. I have run copper for several years and they never leaked.

Lifting an engine with a jack on the damper is only good if you want a slipping outer ring on the same :-(
