Just put on a new edelbrock 750 cfm carb (1411), engine is a new 400, performer intake, HEI dist. Timing was set to 10 degrees initial, don't know total. When you step on it it pops through the carb. Could this be a timing issue, or a carb issue? The thing is running very rich.

If it's running rich, that would just about eliminate the carb. Why do you say it's running rich?

Try advancing the timing a little at a time to see what happens.

i tried advancing it a little, didn't go too far, still happened. When i advanced it the idle would pick up, this is normal i assume? Sorry for the lame questions, i'm still new to this.

Check fireing order. Maybe a plug wire out of order. Does this backfire only happen while your driving and put your foot to the floor?

Will check the firing order tomorrow.
Have not driven the car yet. Just sitting in park, if i get on the throttle it will pop through the carb. Doesn't seem to happen as much when i slowly apply throttle. But i have not messed with it too much, i just got it running, i will play with it more tomorrow.

I just put in new plugs, checked the firing order, all is fine. I noticed it doesn't pop when i slowly get on the throttle, only when i goose it a little bit. The car is running very rich once you give it gas, i tuned the idle circuit today, and i ordered the calibration kit from edelbrock today also.

Also there is a bit of valvetrain noise. I was going to pop off the valve colvers and adjust the rockers with the car running, Need to paint the valve covers anyways http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif To do this you simply loosen the rocker bolt untill you hear it clatter a bit, then tighten it till it is silent, then go 1/4 - 1/2 turn more? Is this correct?

Only if your valve train is adjustable (locking nuts), otherwise torque to 20#.

Be sure all of the valves are opening, especially the exhaust. I had a chebby truck that would pop out the intake when you got on it. Turned out the #8 exhuast lobe was worn, only opened the valve about .100. It would dump hot exhaust into the intake under hard accel.

did this car ever run without backfiring and black smoke? Or did it just start doing this after you had the ignition apart and put a different (with a stuck float) carb on it?
I wouldnt screw around with the valves etc until you fix what is already broken, deal with one thing at a time,

engine was newly rebuilt, have not driven it yet. carb is a new edelbrock 750 cfm (1411). it had a holley 650 cav secondary on it for the cam break in, but i wasn't there for that so i don't know how it ran then
