Depends on what your State DMV requires. Best place to start is with a visit to them (usually better than a call). I hope you got a bill of sale from the seller, as you'll need some evidence of ownership. If you have the VIN I'd let DMV run a check on it to make sure the seller actually owned the car and was entitled to sell it.

I bought one once that had had the VIN tag replaced (you couldn't even tell it had been done) and when we removed the trunk floor we found one of the hidden VIN's on the frame rail (driver's side, top of frame rail). After wire brushing away the rust and crud we could see the VIN and it did not match the plate on the pillar post. I called DMV and it turns out the car had been stolen 15 years ago. DMV tried for 3 months to contact the previous owner, but couldn't find him so they went to court with me and the judge awarded me the title to the car. But that was a close call!

What year did they start putting vin #'s on the frame? Thanks

not sure when it was started, but my 1964's all have it. According to the DMV officer who checked out the car there are several places where there are "hidden VIN's" on all cars, the top of the frame rail, driver's side under trunk pan being the spot for the Pontiacs.
