I know this may not be the right time of year to be concerned with the AC system, but does anyone know how much oil should be added to a new AC system for a 78 T/A. Everything has been replaced and I need to add the oil before I button it up for evacuation. The compressor was purchased without oil also. Also, what would be the correct amount of R12 that is required (rough figure). Thanks

Ralph: The correct amount of oil is 10 fluid ounces of refrigerant oil. The R-12 capacity is 3.25 lbs.

I put about 3 OZ. in the Evap. 3 OZ. in the Cond. and 4 OZ. into the compressor.

I would also suggest using a UV dye, to make leak detection easy later on.

When you get it buttoned up, rotate the compressor (not the clutch) about 18-20 times to circulate some oil inside the compressor. After starting, "burnish" the clutch in by cycling the clutch on-off about 20 times at a cycle rate of 1 sec. on, 1 sec. off.
