I just had elect work done on my 69 bird 350 auto. My question now is when the key is turned to on position what idiot light(s) should come on? Now only the oil light illuminates. I thought the GEN light should too.

Your right it should with key in the on position and engine not running.
|
thanks...I think all 3 should illuminate with key to ON position with car not running...TEMP, GEN and OIL...what about when the key is in the ACC position?
|
I'm sure no lights in the acc position none on mine
|
The Temp and Gen light should be lit in the "on" position and the oil pressure light should be lit when you move the ignition to "start". The Gen light may be on in the ACC. position, mine is.
|
hmmmmm...conflicting data within ACC mode??...anyone else?...does it matter does the car know the difference???

http://forums.performanceyears.com/g.../icon_cool.gifI'm not a firebird man but the oil light will be on when the key is on. Gen light should be too. why? no oil pressure/no charging... the temp light if seperate will light as you turn to start just as a bulb check. Unless like my Catalina, you have the cold/hot light. in that case the cold light will be also lit. I know that your birds didn't have these. If you have gauges then the lights would work differant.

I agree with EMD201, the Oil and Gen should be on in 'run' (eng not running) and Temp during Cranking. This is a built in "Bulb Check" feature. If I remember correct when I had the "idiot" lights (i've switched to rally gauges)in my '68 FB the Gen light would glow faint when the key was in the ACC position.

Had a similiar problem recently---the plug at the alternator was shorted out. Reset the prongs-everything was good.

Now that I just picked up a '69 GTO I can confirm what I posted here on the 7th.
The GEN light glows in the ACC position! Is full bright in the IGN position engine not running. DanC |
danc is correct now that I pay attention and think about it.
