Well now that I have the 3.55 gears in, more fun to drive, but hiway cruising sucks and fuel economy went from bad to horrible(Holley is part to blame, need to get a Qjet). I have read past posts on this upgrade, but just to be sure, from what I understand,200R4 is a direct bolt in, just need TV cable vs 700R4 you must get a bellhousing, shorten driveshaft, move crossmember back...too much hassle, so if I find a 200r4 which is built up to handle 450hp, my stock 389 should be ok...question I have is my his/her shifter, I actually use it a lot to shift manually, how will that work with 4 spd auto since there are only 3 slots for drive on the shifter...Do I need to get another shifter, I would hate to take out the stock shifter. Those of you who have upgraded to 700r4/200r4, what did you do?? thanks greg

Greg,
Contact Shiftworks for a kit to modify your shifter/ indicator so you will be able to use all the gear selections. Let us know it works.

Your gonna need a driveshaft yoke. The diameter is different.

You can get a lockup controller from Jegs or Summit I think so you can control the locking/ unlocking of the torque converter. You just have to remember to unlock it when you stop.
I think I remember reading about someone did the same conversion and wired the switch to disengage lockup when they stepped on the brake pedal.

Also let us know how it works out...I want to do the same conversion on my '67 Tempest. Thanks!

I got a recent quote from Bowtie Overdrives for 2004R to replace TH350 (so not exactly what you are doing). It adds up: level 3 tranny (strongest) 1284, 2200 torque converter 154, install kit ie pressure gauge, temp gauge, and in-line filter (mandatory for warranty) 67, TV kit 110 (expensive but trick), 3-4 speed linkage adapter 85, speedo gear and hsg 44, inspection cover ?, dipstick ?, lockup TC wiring kit ? Total 1947. Like Cliff R is always saying, it takes moolah to make a strong 2004R.

Hurst makes a 4-speed Dual Gate shifter for the 200-4R and 700-R4 that can be mounted in a console if one desires. I have one in my 66 GTO with factory console. Only difference (visually, anyway) between the original Pontiac Dual Gate and this new one is the shift lever is bent like an original Oldsmobile unit.

I installed a B&M Quicksilver shifter in my signature GTO below. It allows precise control over the forward gears in my 700R for racing, and looks great on my stock console.
