I need to change my pressed in rocker arm studs with screwed studs and I was wondering if this can be accomplished with the heads still on the motor in the car. Also, should the screwed studs be loctited in place. I should have had it done when the heads were off the car but for some reason my machinist did not bring it up. Thanks

Thanks Floyd, I have never done this before but that doesn't mean I won't try. After all, everything we do in life we have never done the first time we do it and look where we are today. (of course we get a lot of bumps along the way).

What are the pitfalls of replacing the studs with the heads still mounted? I was thinking that as long as I keep all the shaving off the head (practice good FME) that I should be OK. There appears to be enough room even with the springs still installed. I am a very good "Handyman" but of course not an expert mechanic.

My best bet would probably be to get a better set of heads anyway. Right now they are 1968 #15 (small valve) and am looking to install some 6X-4 (maybe). A head changout is a lot easier I know, except for that darn bolt by the AC box!! Any suggestions on best course of action to get that bolt torqued properly?

I did mine on the car with no problems. After i got the old ones out, i put a rag around the boss to catch any metal from tapping them and then just tapped the holes. I did loc-tite mine in.

Dont even consider trying to install screw in studs yourself unless you have a machine shop. If you try hand tapping the holes the studs will not be straight and you will end up with strange vavle train wear.

H-O Racing used to sell a simple aluminum piece for pulling the old studs out, and also used as a guide for tapping the new threads.
