Has anyone replaced the oil pan gasket on the Olds 403 in a '79 T/A with the engine still in the car? How long did it take, is it difficult.

Hey there,
I would definitely suggest yanking her out and doing it right...you are going to have to make sure that the pan rails are clean and that there is no gasket material around it...that will be a tremendous PITA if you try that in the car. Also, once out, you can very easily change any gasket that you may want/need to. Then, shoot, you can paint the motor while it is out...it will look like a million bucks.

Ultimately it is your call, but I would be crazy and just yank the motor out of her. Remove the radiator, hood, then the motor...that's all you need to do.

And while your at it you can add headers and a cam maybe a 2500 stall.


Oh sorry I just get excited when one comes out for repairs.

Seriously take it out so you can check your main caps or replace them. They are a weak part in the 403 motor. never hurts to be safe

Yeah, I know how that goes.

I have done it twice in the car. Not bad. You have to remove the radiator shroud, the HEI, remove the exhaust, tranny flywheel cover, and the motor mount bolts through the clam shell. Then hoist her up. Have fun...getting the pan off is easy. Getting it back on well...that can take a while...
