I have a 69 GTO with 4 speed transmission. The problem I have is every once in a while it will pop out of gear by itself when i'm driving. It mostly happens in first gear so when I take off I hold the shifter in gear. Any ideas; clutch, syncros or maybe shifter linkage adjustment.

The syncro assembly is worn out. And possibly the gear teeth also.

I had the same problem with my muncie popping out of 4th gear. I finally got sick of holding the shifter while in 4th so I had it rebuilt by http://www.libertysgears.com/ They are near Detroit, MI. I'm not sure where you are located, but they do great work. They replaced my 3rd gear and syncros, etc.....They said it wasn't abused, but was just a worn, almost 40 year old trans.

If your shifter has stops (like a Hurst) remove them and try it again. If that's not the problem. the collar that the fork pushes is probably the gremlin - worn out.

My local rebuilder in Moline IL has done well for very little $$ - email me if you want his number.

The first, and least expensive, place to check is the shifter linkage adjustment. Put the transmission in neutral; you should be able to slide a pin throught the alignment holes in the lower shifter arms. If the arms don't line up, adjust the rods until they do. If the shifter is already set up properly, how old is the shifter itself? The shifter or its various pivot points, may be worn enough so that it isn't "throwing" the transmission far enough into gear. Try installing a new or newly rebuilt shifter before removing the transmission. After you have eliminated the shifter as a possible source of your problems, then move on to the more involved job of checking the trans.
