Hey everyone,

I pulled the original 3.23 10-bolt safe-t-track out of my '65 in preparation to sell it (replaced with a 12 bolt). I can't find any of the two-letter codes stamped on the rear, only a "P 3.23" stamped on the backside of the passenger axle tube. Any ideas? Can I tell if this is a 2 or 4 pinion posi without pulling the cover?

Thanks,
Tony

A 3.23 non Safe-T-Track rear end code is WF and YF with Safe-T-Track. If you don't have a code stamped on the passenger side of the axle tube it sounds like it isn't the original rearend, so its anyone guess. Non safe-T-Track rearends codes in '65 start with W or X. Safe-T-Track start with Y or Z.

The code you identified sounds like a 64 code to me. If it is an early car, it could have received a 64 rear from the factory. As far as 2 or 4 pinion, I doubt that with the 3:23 it would be a 4 pinion.

Greg
Thats a possiblity, but in '64 the P code was a 3.90 ratio and had a green paint color. The 3.23 ratio was either L or M with a brown or green/brown paint color. An additional X would indicate Safe-T-Track.

I know that this is absolutely no help to you, but my 65 Tempest has the exact same stamp where the code is supposed to be located. Mike

Hey tony I have a 2.78 open rear that has stamped letters (cant remember what) it may be from a 64. Can you give me more info on your 12 bolt swap? Have you sold the 3.23? That is the ratio I was considering. You can email me at [email protected]. Thanks, Mike
