I have a friend with a 92 Grand Am. The alternator on the car goes out about every month. At first I thought it might be just a bad alternator from Autozone. So she went to another parts store to get one, and it's the same problem. About a month later, it's out again. There's got to be something causing this problem. What could be causing these alternators to short out, or stop working every month or so?

Those GM alternators had a bad heat sink problem. When you buy a rebuilt, get one with a lifetime warranty so you can exchange it when it goes bad eventually or buy a new aftermarket one, not a rebuilt who advertises that they have redesigned it to handle the heat load.

Thanks, I'll keep working with it.
