After I found the build sheet in the seat of this 1970 Judge with a vinyl top, I got to thinking about what other unusual 1970 Judges were made. Recently someone was talking about a 1970 Judge with bucket seats and column shift. Does anyone know if any Judges were built with bench seat and column shift? I have seen several 70 GTOs with that combo.

My 1970 Judge is ram air IV, bench seat, 4-speed.

I don't find bench seats unusual. Unusual to me is a two-tone car or a color that was special-ordered, or a trim combo that is not common. Vinyl tops are not unusual in '70s.

My Judge was Atoll blue/blue interior - but was ordered with a Sandalwood Cordova top.
I've not seen another with that color combo. |
R 70 Did you sell your car to someone who will restore to original? I'll bet that was a tough decision to sell that car.

http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gifI have a special order paint - - on data plate. My 70 RAIV Judge is Daytona Yellow. I do not know of any other RAIVs that came this way. I was told of a RAIII, but I believe it had paint # on data plate.

"Daytona Yellow" is Chevy for paint code 51 Ditzler #2094,
Pontiac called it "Golden Red Yellow" in 1970 and it was RPO. In 1969 they called it "Goldenrod Yellow" code 76 and it was a special "Firebird Only" color. This doesn't show any GTOs in this color... http://ultimategto.com/70colors.htm But, I don't know how accurate it is though. |
Allen,
If you ordered an auto trans car and a bench seat interior, you got the column shift. I've got a white '69 RA IV auto trans Judge with a black bench seat interior and column shift. I know of a white '69 RA III auto trans Judge with a white bench seat interior and column shift. I'm also familiar with a Carousel red '69 RA III auto trans Judge convert with a black bench seat interior and column shift. There are others out there. They are somewhat rare, but not necessarily desireable. |
http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...icon_smile.gif The Yellow for firebird was special order, but will still have paint code on trim tag. It was a pontiac color. My RAIV Judge, has - - as it was not a pontiac color. Goldenrod was offered on birds in 70, but not on Judges, thus I believe the special - -. I compared it to 1970 paint chips, looks like Daytona Yellow. I believe it is a "one off car". Pics & build sheet can be found under 1970 GTOs on ultiminate gto site.

My Olds W30 has the - - on the trim tag also. Oldsmobile called it Sebring Yellow. I found the buildsheet under the seat witch listed the paint code as 51.

thanks for all the info guys. Sounds like some interesting cars to me. I sure would like to know the story behind those bench seat Judges when they were being ordered and if any 70 Judges ever had the bench / column combo.
|
JudgeRagtop,
I had a '70 W-30 in Sebring Yellow that also had the "- -" on the data plate. My understanding was that Sebring Yellow and the bright red color were special order 442 colors. If you ordered either one, you got the "- -". I also found an interesting surprise in the passenger bucket seat back. There was a small card indicating "W-30" and several of the additional options. |
Allen,
I've been told that many of the serious drag racers ordered the bench seat to save weight. I've heard something in the range of 50 lbs between the bench and buckets. Although the standard transmission cars were considered to be quicker than the automatic cars back in those days, automatic cars generally produce more consistent quarter mile times. I believe that an automatic car would be a better choice for most racers if they were going to bracket race. If you look at the top ten fastest cars in the FAST series, you will see that most (if not all) of them are automatic cars. I suspect that with the technology avancements in auto transmissions and stall converters, the auto trans tends to be quicker choice these days. |

I do not know why the "--" was used when it was an RPO. It is not consistent with extra-cost (not special-order) colors on other cars. I believe Rallye Red is the same way, and perhaps the aqua and gold that were extra that year. |

I'm sure I'll see it in a Pontiac magazine someday. Yes, it was VERY HARD to let it go. http://pysales.com/images/sweat.gif |
I know of a '70 JUDGE CONVERTIBLE with a bench seat !
|
If you also ordered an automatic, with buckets, but no console, you got the column shift..I found that combo even stranger than bench/column...
|
I have heard of that combination Robz, but I have never seen one. I wonder how much the woman of the family might have had to do with bench and / or column cars when ordered? I know that because of the weight savings of bench, bracket racers ordered some, but surely i would think there were other reasons too.
