I HAVE RECENTLY REBUILT A 455 FOR MY 85 CHEVY TRUCK, I WANT TO RUN AT LEAST A 3" DUAL EXHAUST SET UP. THE ONLY WAY THAT I SEE THIS BEING USEFUL IS TO RUN HEADERS. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT APPLICATION OF HEADER WILL FIT IN THE TRUCK? I WAS HOPING TO RUN A 4 TUBE HEADER WITH AT LEAST 1 3/4" PRIMARIES, BUT AT THIS POINT I CAN'T BE PICKY.
THE TRUCK HAS A TURBO 400 TRANNY AND IT IS A FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRICEATED. |

the problem you'll run into with the headers and the 3" is getting the pipe bent around the transfer case. i did this in a blazer some years ago and ran 2 1/2" with no regrets. i ran a set of factory ho manifolds instead of tube headers tho.
i think a set of a-body headers will work in the application but i won't say for sure.[ it's been 6 or 7 yrs since i did this] mike |
What are you guys using to mount the 455 in a Chevy truck???? Always wanted to do that....
|
guy, i used 74 catalina engine stands and the factory chevy truck frame mounts.the engine dropped right in the blazer chassis. i took a th400 and installed the 4x4 output shaft in it during the rebuild.

I've been told to use both 79 A body mounts(engine mounts and frame mounts) I have yet to install the engine due to the fact that I don't know what type of pluming the powerplant will be exhaling from.
As far as bolting up the tranny, TCI makes an adapter plate for about 55 bucks. Hope this helps |
Kool, Thanks Guys! I always wanted to do a 455 swap into my 79 Big-Block Suburban, or maybe I will keep my eye open for a "Diesel" Suburban (no smog required!) but you do have to change the gas tank.
|
Guy,
If you find and old 6.2 Diesel it should have the same bellhousing bolt pattern as Pontiac. As far as the fuel tanks, I don't plan to change them on my rig, I don't see why they would even be an issue. :D |
the 6.2 uses a chevy bolt pattern. early and hd units had a large intake. later 6.2's were a better engine, although all are expensive to build.
the 5.7 used the bop pattern. if you're lucky you'll find a th 400 in the 5.7 units[ 1 ton or 4x4] ;) :D the 5.7 was junk. :( |
When the 455 is gently lowered onto the Chevy frame mounts, does it officially become a big block? "BBP" :D :D

Been running Pontiac engines in my Chev trucks for years now!
Skip the Chev motor mounts! Skip the frame mounts! Use the TA factory frame mounts and the metal block ones! The engine will sit level in the bay and not have a large backward tilt! Currently running a 65 389 in my 72 Chev and have run a 69 400 in a 78 chev that was diesel before. |
black cat, the 2wd that i did had clearance issues with the t/a mounts that's why i recommended the big car setup. i didn't have the tilt problem either. i know the big block trucks used a taller frame stand so maybe that was the difference.
if i do another it'll be a 4spd 4wd. :D mike |
http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...s/icon_mad.gifI bought a set of Super Comp. Hookers for a 68 GTO and they slipped right into place. I then noticed that the right side header was going to hit on the front drive-shaft/front axel saddles, the header was also curved towards the center of the tranny. Rather than customising these new headers I ran a set of 3 tubes and they seam like they will work with a little modification to the right side. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif
