I recently bought a 70' GTO with a Old's 455 rocket in it. I want to sell the engine and put the original back in. How can i tell the year of the Olds 455?

Should be a 2 letter code on the oil filler tube(if its 1968-1972).That code will determine HP rating as well as year.
Let me know if you need more help or want me to look the code up for you. Colin |
The casting # for the block is right above the water pump. Go to www.442.com . Look under Olds Faq. You should be able to decode the motor pretty easily. Depending on what heads are on this motor...they can be valuable. There is a section on heads too. Hope this helps..........

Hey olds. Do you have any idea how to contact the owner of that www.442.com list? Every email I've ever sent the last couple of years has bounced.
I was trying to send him better information on the GMC Motorhome, which used the Olds 455 (73 to mid-77, up to about VIN 1283) and 403 (mid 77 and 78) engines, with the TH425 front wheel drive system. That website states that the "J" heads are about useless. However, they are necessary for the 455 GMC's, and they seemingly are in short supply.
