What's your displacement and your approx compression?

400 30 over.16 heads just redone by a machine shop.standard crank.compresion prob.10-1.

Crower makes a 228/235/112 cam, pretty sure the number is 60243. We've used a few of them in early 400's with manual transmissions. Pretty aggressive cam, at best 12" of vacuum at 1000rpm's, noticable lope at idle. On KRE's dyno they made 424hp/465tq with a 406 engine using unported 72cc heads, iron intake and q-jet.....Cliff

thanx cliff by the way the carb for my 68 gto runs like it never has.it will fry the tires off .couldnt be more impressed with your work.back to the cam,the one i allready have is a crane.it says 272/284 adv. duration.cam timing,216/228 duration.lift,454/480.will this be a close match to your suggestions?

Great, glad you like it!

The 216/228 cam will act much like a stock cam in the 10 to 1 CR 400 engine. Probably idle smooth with a "deep/heavy" sound. The 228/235 cam would be a much better choice as it will bleed off some cylinder pressure at low speeds and pull very strong in the upper mid-range and top end. You'll need at least 3.55 gears (3.73's would be better) to effectively use it.....Cliff

Are you planning on running racing fuel in your iron headed 10:1 cr motor to avoid detonation?

johnsma22 07-04-2005 11:22 AM

Cliff, What would be the effect of running the above combo (400 ci 228/235 cam with 3.23 gears and 4 speed)? I only ask because I am in the process of building a similar motor (eheads) for my 76 T/A and have a 3.23 8.5 10 bolt rear.
