I have decided to take the plunge and install the 1/4's on my '66 GTO convert.I talked to some body shop people and they recommend flanging the top edge of the new 1/4's before intalling. I checked into buying a pneumatic flanging tool and found it works on metal up to 14 gauge. I am using original used 1/4's from another car and am unsure if the tool will flange the metal seeing it's thicker than aftermarket patch panels. Anyone have experience using this tool?What is the thickness of original metal on a '66? I really don't want to use the backing plate method to install the 1/4's because I will be able to see that when I look into the trunk of the car.

If it will do up to 14ga., it'll do any 60s & up Detroit sheetmetal.

Take a look at the hand flanging vice grip type tool(s) that Eastwood has. That's what I use on most body panels and I have access to a Pexto metal worker.

If you have a compressor, get a pnuematic crimper. TP Tools and others sell them. Reasonably priced and I'm very pleased with mine. As a bonus, you'll also get a punch -- it works great!
