IF YOU HAVE THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION, PLEASE HELP WITH MY 15X7 RALLY II POST 5/21
While installing rear sway bar,(70 GTO Conv.) I took note to coding on left axle tube ( WF 294). My research tells me that the WF stamp signifies a 3.23 standard axle identification. Another book source tells me it is non Safe-t-Track. What is the difference? What does the 294 relate to? Should it correlate like the VIN # / engine stamp/ tranny stamp? I am curious if the rear-end is worn. Front acceleration allows for only right wheel spin. Reverse acceleration only allows for left wheel spin (burn out). I guess this is not a posi rear-end, (allowing both wheels to spin in forward acceleration- burn out). Those with the knowledge please enlighten me! Thanks, Tilster |

Tilster:
Safe-T-Track was Pontiacs name for a posi or limited slip differential. This type of rear will distribute power to both wheels equally even if one tire has no traction at all. You are right about having a standard open diff in your car, what we like to can a "one legger" rear end. There is nothing wrong with your rear, its doing exactly what it should. ------------------ "Run wild with an Indian, not with the crowd in a Chevy" Check out my restoration at http://members.aol.com/jetmech15/gto |
Thanks TinInjun,
I'm tempted to get posi, but trying to keep her stock, (except wheels,HEI,paint). It just ain't right seeing a 100 foot one legger in the mirror! |
tilster, one option for posi the you have is installing a lok-rite unit. this replaces the spider gears in the fact carrier. works like a detroit locker, with the bonus of not having to set up the ring and pinion.mike

Thanks Mike,
I've decided to go posi. Just now need to find out which jobs have precedence. Tilster |
