Today I had my front end media blasted with Baking Soda. I have to tell everyone this is freaking awesome and if you are repainting your car this is well worth the extra effort. Since this was my first time blasting though, I have a couple questions for the pro's.. How expensive is it to do an entire car? I had my front end done(Hood, fenders, inners... inside & out) for $250. If I want the rest of the car blasted I was quoted $500 which would do the door jambs, trunk, and interior. Has anyone else done this before?? Is this price fair..?

I had plastic media used on a 69 Olds vert that I had and they charged me $650.00 for the whole car. The price you were given doesn't seem out of line. Plus baking soda will take out some if not all of the bondo, where as plastic won't.

Baking Soda uh? Wow, never heard of that. That will be a handy hint when I get around to getting my car done. Thanks.

It will take care of that mildew smell for years to come.

It sort of depends on how much time you have to spend on paint stripping, and what your time's worth. It also depends on whether you view it being worth $600 to pay somebody to do something you can do yourself for the price of a couple of gallons of chemical stripper and a couple of sunny Saturdays in the autumn.

I did two cars (a '68 GTO and a '63 Catalina) with chemical paint stripper. I remember the GTO got Zip Strip but I forget what I used on the Catalina.

The Zip Strip didn't remove the factory red oxide primer, so more wetsanding with 180 grit wet/dry was required. The Catalina's primer came right off.

The other method is to use a DA sander. While it wont' get all the crevices like media blasting will, it's cheap, fast and effective.

Personally, I receive a lot of satisfaction from stripping away the paint and laying the body bare. It's therapeutic to take your time on a nice fall afternoon in your garage and really getting to know every square inch of your car's sheetmetal.

You lose this level of personal satisfaction/interaction with your car when you just drop it off for somebody else to shoot with an air hose.

Plastic media blasting won't take care of any rust either, It will just remove the paint. for removable parts, fenders,hoods,deck lids inner fenders, bumper braces, etc. I like to have them chemically dipped. It gets everything including rust and makes the metal look brand new, You can then clean it etch it epoxy prime it and do your body work. :cool:

Scott, I agree... I used chemical stripper on my Judge and took the whole car down to bare metal. I then sand blasted any rust areas that I saw before sealing the whole think in DP40 epoxy primer.

You really do get to know your car when doing this!

Walnut shells work good as well. Although they leave an oily film on the striped parts and need to be degreased before painting.
