Alright,I've owned my 79 regal for about 16 years. Original 301 with 350 tranny in it. My question is, do I rebiuld or would I be better of going with a pontiac 350? Would it bolt right in? How about the exhaust, distrubitor, intake, etc. Any differances? First pontiac engine.

depends on if you wanna step up the performance or just keep the economy type street motor.

Except for exhaust larger Pontiacs are nearly a bolt in. The intake is very different 301's are short deck engines. You can also install 400's and 455's, the accessories will bolt up such as power steering, AC, and alternator to any of them unless you have pre 70 heads. Even the motor mounts will work, trans bolts up, but the exhaust manifolds are different. I think the head pipes bolt on in the same location as log manifolds, or you can get headers.
I have put 400/455's in a few 301 cars and I have been looking for a 301 powered Regal/Cutlass/Gran Prix to drop a larger engine into. I am not a fan of the 301 engine, but they arent junk, just not a performance engine. |
Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to go ahead and rebuild the more economical 301 since its my daily driver for now and I dont have the extra $ to replace the extra parts on the 350.
