Does anyone have a rule of thumb for the starter shims that go on top of the stock pontiac starter that bolts to the block? This paticular engine did not have a starter attached to it before we rebuilt it and I've replaced the flexplate with a new stock unit. How do I know if I've got too many or too little? Gary I don't know if there is a rule of thumb for starter shims but I just removed mine ( 67 gto) and it had 2 shims. Your ear is probably you best tool here. Maybe start with 1 or 2 and take a good listen as you crank it. Maybe somebody else will know for sure. Good luck

Use a screwdriver to slide the starter shaft out to where it fully engages the flexplate. You should have about the thickness of a paper clip between the teeth. Shim it until you have that gap.

A bad day fishing beats any day working...and if you can drive your GTO to get there....all the better!

I too just had mine off my 66 and it has 2 shims of equal thickness.

yep 2 shims.but the paper clip method is prefered
to measure.
