i have the same problem. i originally thought that it needed lifters, because i had another car that sounded similar, but it turns out to be a wrist pin (i think thats the right name). i guess when the car gets warm the metal expands and there is a vibration. hope this helps

sounds like lifters But it,s quiet when the oil is cold? how old is the motor?
noise is hard to pin down without details.

it is quiet when cold-do not know where, when,or if engine was built-was in car when I bought it. engine does not smoke or anything like that-seems to run ok even after noise starts-knowI have exhaust leaks but sounds to me like valve train noise

captain42082 02-21-2003 08:24 AM

noise started all at once, never heard it before, even with ex leaks-I guess I should start with adjustment-someone said 061 heads have press in studs, may have pulled loose??? hoe to adjust-engine hot or cold ? what is procedure? unknown cam but hydralic have set of rockers off 31 heads with poly locks-maybe should change out? still learning and will never know as much as some!!!!!!!

JEFF KING 02-22-2003 05:30 PM

Could still be a exhaust leak they sound alot alike. You should fix the leaks to help you pinpoint the noise. Pull the valve covers and run her warm.. check your valve motion and see if you can find what bank it,s coming from.I don,t know if you have polys or not so i would get a set before before you lash-em. I don,t think you pulled a stud is the motor missing? and it would knock all the time. try these things, and let me know i,ll help you all i can.

Try running it without the fuel pump installed. A broken spring will sound just like a lifter but the engine will still run fine.

captain42082 02-23-2003 10:45 AM

thanks for the tips and help-have a set of heddman headers still in the box-that should take care of ex leaks when installed-will poly locks off 31-ram air 1 ? work with present rockers-31 heads are complete as found with rockers,etc-sure would hate to install headers and then have to do it all again

JEFF KING 02-23-2003 02:12 PM

Noises from your motor can make you nuts!
I myself will tear it down till i find the problem soon as it starts! So i see how you feel.
First before the headers i would just replace the gaskets... And listen to her, have a friend do the same see what he thinks, also a good old school mech can pin point a sound a mile away! You should have a few in your town.
Could just be cam/lifter time and thats easy!
or if shes still running good leave it till you next rebuild But if your nuts like me let me know and well take it from there http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...on_biggrin.gif

if I just had heat in the garage I could get started on this !!! maybe need to move to florida and warm up !!! spring can not be that far away!

wholio 02-23-2003 07:44 PM

What is your oil pressure when cold and when hot? Checked with a mechanical gauge.

68CONV400 02-23-2003 07:50 PM

See if you can narrow down where the noise is coming from.

IE:Put a long screwdriver to your ear (No Really)and move it around on the valve covers and timing cover till you hear it the loudest. That will at least get you in the general area.

PS-Watch the fan and belts. http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...s/icon_eek.gif

Hope this helps,
