In the stage of deciding on the final details of how I would like to finish my 70 Lemans 2 dr post. Really a big fan of the street sleeper/factory supercar look. You know, the base model stripped down dog dish caps. So plain it looks suspicious. Did Pontiac ever produce any 68-72 a bodies like that? I am familiar with the Chevrolets and the dealer cars like Yenko, Harrel, Baldwin and Dana etc.. I would like to find some info on Pontiacs like these if they were ever built. Also would like to see an interior pic or two of anyone with a 70 Lemans or GTO with red interior. Kind of on the fence about going with red. Never really seen a red interior up close. I will be using a bench seat. Thanks.[email protected]

Yep. Except you didn't need to COPO you just went to the dealer and ordered it. '70-'72.
'70 Tempest or T-37 2 dr sedan w/400-350hp. Stick or auto
'71 T-37 2 dr sedan w/455HO. Stick or AT
'72 LeMans 2 dr sedan w/455HO but it had the endura nose w/ram air as a requirement. Stick or AT.

My avatar is a '71.

You could add a '69 Judge stripe, which probably would be correct. Or try some wheelcovers instead of poverty caps - maybe making it look like a family car instead of a Q-ship is the way to go?

What colors the exterior?

68bird400HO 04-09-2005 07:28 PM

If you don't have a 455HO laying around do some searching on a Magnum 400. These were stripped down tempests ordered with 400 4bbls. I can't remember if they were post cars or not. They were offered through Knafel Pontiac and only about 50 were built. I don't know if any originals have surfaced.

The exterior color is still in debate. The frame is about finished and getting put away so I can concentrate on the body. Hope to start stripping it in the next couple of weeks. Thinking Carasoul Red or maybe White. Hope I spelled that right. Body is 95% rust free and needs minimal work, so it won't be long before I need to know what color is going on the car. Kind need to coordinate that with my interior color choice. Just trying to get my ducks in a row. Anyone know how far up the body color goes underneath? Does it go to the bottom on the firewall and stop or all the way up. Not really looking to be factory correct just don't want it to look odd. Thanks for the replies guys.

Thanks for the info 68bird. We must have been replying at the same time. Did not see your post before. Probably just stick with the stock 350 that is in it for now. Money is not there for engine changes. Besides the 350 was recently rebuilt by the previos owner so it is sound. swapped a 4 barrel on it for now. Interested mostly in getting it back on the road and enjoying some driving time first. Only drove this car 15 miles before I ripped it apart last year, so I am itching to get it done. Really want to just get the look I want down. Engines are a lot easier to change later than paint is. Thanks again.

Lee72,
Adding to what 68bird400HO has posted regarding the Knafel Magnum 400, you might want to also research the 1970 model Lemans called "the Jury" These were post coupe '70 4-speed Lemans cars prepared by Stampede Pontiac in Canada.

Reason I asked is I had 2 70 GTO's, both cardinal red. One had red interior the other had tan (Saddle I think it was called) I always thought the saddle looked best.

You don't have many choices in 70 with a red exterior. White is my favorite, but not available in 70. Black is nice but too hot w/o AC. Check out the tan.

Just my $.02

Isn't Parchment pretty much white?

BN 04-10-2005 07:44 AM

Yes it is. I don't believe white/parchment was available originally. According to GTO A source book 70 interior choices were:
Bucket seat: Blue, Brown, Red, Saddle, Green, Sandlewood, Black

Bench seat: Sandlewood, black

Red interiors are my personal favorite. If you go with red the exterior should be white, black or silver to get some contrast. A black car with red interior and redlines is about as good as it gets. Just my 2 cents worth. Jim

gto4door, If " the jury " Lemans was built in canada would it have came with a Pontiac engine in 70' or would it have still been Chebby powered?

I really am not a red person http://forums.performanceyears.com/g...n_rolleyes.gif sorry. But I saw a 68 bird once red in side pearl white out side and I really liked the way it looked.
I do agree with JKGTO all black with red inside and a twin red pin stripe is pretty sharp.

lethal 428,
By 1970, GM Canada put the Beaumont to rest and allowed Pontiac to sell the Lemans. The Lemans with 6cyl used the Chevy motor, but the V8 Lemans got the Pontiac motor. Here is a picture of "the Jury".
